Rosters and roster template

One of the tasks on the project to-do list is to "have all team rosters completed and updated and alphabetized (we may want to use a sortable wikitable)." The big question is, how do we want to do up the rosters? I've been using this table for the Pioneers articles, which is based off the NFL roster table. Baseball uses a slightly different style of table that uses sub-columns; indoor lacrosse uses a variation of this. Hockey, meanwhile, uses something completely different. Outdoor lacrosse and soccer also have rosters of one sort or another. The basketball roster template seems to be the most comprehensive with more player stats, a column for the specific position, and an incorporated sub-column for coaches and stuff, not to mention that the entire table is sortable for each column of information.

In my personal opinion, the hockey and soccer tables are out just for looks - they really don't look all that good. Outdoor lacrosse is really kinda long and takes up a lot of vertical space, which arena football would also do. So that narrows it down to some sort of template based of off NFL/AFL, baseball, basketball, and/or indoor lacrosse. We need to decide what information we want in a roster template beyond name, position, and number (and I think listing position for each player is a better idea than the categories like I've got now). Okay, I think I've worked out what would make for a good roster template. It's based on an NFL roster template. My thought is to make one that is sortable by position, name, and number. I don't think weight, height, and status are necessary (college or hometown? Up in the air to me, since af2 teams use more local talent than pro leagues do). I think it would be better to do it in two columns, but I don't know if things can be sorted across two columns. Anyway, the last section (listed as "Other" on the Bills page) would then have coaching and team administration info - head coach, assistants, owner, GM, etc. Unfortunately, I'm very unfamiliar with creating templates of this complexity. Anyone want to take a stab at it? Also, I can provide a mockup image if someone wants to see what I'm describing for the template. Thoughts and comments appreciated. af2 team defunct template

All inclusive infobox

I have created an infobox for active American football players, that is inclusive of all the major football leagues. It includes entry and debut information on af2, Arena Football League, National Football League, oh, and the Canadian Football League. As well, it contains draft information for the NFL and CFL. It also includes a place to list the players high school, which then has a place for awards, and highlights. Then the college section is the same as before, except it has it's own highlights and awards section. As does the professional section (originally the default section). It also includes six stat labels for the AFL, NFL, CFL and af2, in alphabetical order. As well as, an expanded external stats link section, to decrease the number of links in the external section. Not to mention the external links section is placed in alphabetical order, for the most part, not to mention a neatly organized hour glass shape, which was mostly by luck. Just created a series of "#### (AFL)" dab pages

Howdy from the "older side" of WikiProject American Football! In my work of organizing the pages on the older American Football Leagues, I have generated a handful of dab pages such as New York (AFL), Los Angeles (AFL), Boston (AFL), and so forth... and then realized that the AFL could also stand for Arena Football League - I know that a few Arena League teams could be added to them, but I thought it best to leave it to the people who know best. If, along the way, you make new dab pages of this form, please let me know (come to think of it, Philadelphia (AFL) will be needed as there were the Philadelphia Quakers (AFL) of AFL I and the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena League... af2 team infoboxes

Hi, I was doing work on the Rochester Brigade article today, and after doing some research I discovered that three infoboxes - {{afl2 team}}, {{af2 team}} and {{af2 team defunct}} - exist for af2 teams and all three are in use on articles. As an "outsider" to arena football articles, I find this fairly confusing. The easiest way to go would probably be to convert all uses of {{afl2 team}} to one of the other two, but I'll leave that decision for this project to decide. – TMF 16:34, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

The template "af2 team" is the one that should currently be used. I just never got a chance to change all of the teams over to that template and get the afl2 template deleted. I had created the "defunct" template for defunct af2 teams such as the brigade, but in hindsight I think just the "af2 team" template can be used for active and defunct teams. All current af2 team infoboxes have been switched to using {{af2 team}} from the old {{afl2 team}} infobox. There are still a fair number of defunct af2 team articles that still use the old infobox, so we need to change those to the current version. Also, the five teams that were using {{af2 team defunct}} have been switched to {{af2 team}} using the "folded" parameter; {{af2 team defunct}} has been tagged for speedy deletion as a duplicate of {{af2 team}}. ArenaCup X proposed deletion

The article for ArenaCup X has been proposed for deletion. The reasoning is "Wikipedia is not news, especially minor-league entertainment news for an event that hasn't happened." AFL Roster NavBox

Is it fair to remove all roster navboxes from the individual teams' pages in light of the league's announcement that it is suspended indefinitely? I took this to mean that essentially, no players would remain under contract to any teams were it to ever return. Shootmaster 44 (talk) 04:04, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Dispute on rather the League and/or Teams have Folded Yet

I have been seeing lots of WP:Bold edits on Arena Football League and some of the team pages (IE Kansas City Brigade, Colorado Crush, Chicago Rush, and the Arizona Rattlers on them folding for good even though the source specifically states that the League is suspended indefinitely, but has not quite folded yet (AKA Official Chapter 7 Filing). I am feeling these edits are Jumping the Gun too early and they are not sourced to state they have folded. Now the only source that states the league has folded is discussed at Talk:Arena Football League which claims the sources point at a Facebook page. If we can find a proper source that the league is folded and the teams under it folded. (Which I have read some teams may still be around trying to become a part of af2, so that means they are functioning in one way or another.) Let's get this dispute dealt with. The league has not folded. There is a group trying to sue the league into Chapter 7, but at this point in time, the official wording from the league is that it has "suspended football operations indefinitely". Some teams, I believe, are folded (Dallas, Philadelphia, Georgia, Colorado), but there are few if any official statements from those teams announcing the action.WeatherManNX01 (talk) 21:44, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

Season-by-season table

I have created a new season-by-season table for use on team pages. The current table seems kinda smallish and tried to compact all of the information into a little space. The table I have created frees it up a bit. It separates out the postseason and adds a bit of color; I think it's more useful this way. You can check out the table on my sandbox. I used the history of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers and gave them a fictional league and name change to illustrate how that would be handled. Yesterday I created List of Orlando Predators seasons and I was thinking the same could be done for the other former AFL teams. I noticed on the regular Tampa Bay Storm article that it has the original table that you referred to, but for the Storm, there's a link to Tampa Bay Storm seasons as a "main article," so I decided to do the same for the Preds. The table on each team's list of seasons article would be based on what I've seen from almost all other professional teams that have such an article. You know, that's pretty nice. It has detail that was missing in the old version, and the separate page is particularly useful for teams like the Preds and Storm that have a rather lengthy team history. Plus, the extra columns for league and division would allow for the changes that frequently occur in arena/indoor football. Thumbs-up from me, good idea. There could also be an awards column (for things like Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year, etc.), but I don't know where to find that information easily. The only other thing would be to find out the primary colors of a team who changed cities and/or names and/or colors like for the Florida Bobcats who used to be the Miami Hooters and the Sacramento Attack for one season before that. Overall I think if there was a seasons-only article for each team, that rough-looking table on the team's actual article could just be replaced with a {{Main|Article}} template with a link to that team's respective seasons list. I've never been one for putting things like colors or awards in tables like that, but whatever. My preference in regards to the tables is that they go by franchise history rather than team history - as long as a team regards that past incarnation as its own history (and in the arena leagues most, if not all, do). Example: the Bobcats page would also have Hooters and Attack information included. Same for the leagues - we should include information from past leagues as best as we can find. Minor league baseball articles annoy me to no end in that regard - some go with full history, some do not, and it's not consistent across the board. Whatever we do, we need it to be consistent. The awards aren't that important to me. I thought it might be too dificult to find out that kind of information for every team for every AFL season. But yeah, if I understand what you're saying correctly, for a Bobcats article, it would have the seasons of the Hooters and Attack in the table too, similar to the already existing table on the Bobcats' main article. In the case of a team like that, their seasons article would be like the way Cleveland Gladiators seasons is. I wouldn't do it like List of Florida Bobcats seasons and then List of Sacramento Attack seasons separately (especially since there's only one Attack season), but the latter would be a redirect page to the former. I think you understand me perfectly. (Though for that particular example, the black-on-red of the team names is a bit hard on the eyes - that's why I've never a fan of doing table headers or anything in team colors.) GAN backlog reduction - Sports and recreation

As you may know, we currently have 400 good article nominations, with a large number of them being in the sports and recreation section. As such, the waiting time for this is especially long, much longer than it should be. As a result of this, I am asking each sports-related WikiProject to review two or three of these nominations. If this is abided by, then the backlog should be cleared quite quickly. Some projects nominate a lot but don't review, or vice-versa, and following this should help to provide a balance and make the waiting time much smaller so that our articles can actually get reviewed! Just a heads up

I know I busted my butt workin' and expandin' this project, however I have some "sad" news for some of you. I'm done. I'll continue to edit articles and help make them better, however I will not be basically runnin' the project anymore. For the most part, it was only I, who edited the articles and I'm the only one who worked on the newsletter and I'm just burnt out on it. That's why I stopped the newsletter. Sports Notability

There is discussion ongoing at Wikipedia_talk:BIO#RFC:_WP:Athlete_Professional_Clause_Needs_Improvement debating possible changes to the WP:ATHLETE notability guideline. As a result, some have suggested using WP:NSPORT as an eventual replacement for WP:ATHLETE. Iowa Barnstormers

So does anyone know what the official word is on Iowa's history as a franchise? It's just something I've thought about recently. Is this a Cleveland Browns kind of thing (where the New York Dragons would play the Baltimore Ravens role) or in some paradoxical way do the Barnstormers and the Dragons both share 1995–2000? I was under the impression that it's a shared history sort of thing, where both the Dragons and new Barnstormers claim history of the AFL Barnstormers. ArenaFan lists the Dragons as a continuation of the Barnstormers, which supports that end of the theory at least. Finding info regarding the af2 team's connection to the AFL version is harder to find. Personally, I believe the two Barnstormers to be separate entities (especially since the Dragons and af2 Barnstormers played at the same time, meaning that they both can't be the same team). However, there again, as part of the agreement to move, the Oklahoma City Thunder will share the SuperSonics history with a new Seattle franchise should it come to be. Trying to explain that a franchise's history splits between two teams sounds headache-inducing.WeatherManNX01 (talk) 18:09, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Infoboxes for individual seasons

I thought each season could use an infobox like the seasons of just about every sports league that I've seen. I have a little something in my sandbox, but if I went ahead and actually created a page for it (assuming I did everything correctly) it could only be used from the 2005 season on since the league didn't have conference championship games every year. So I was hoping someone who's better than me at syntax and whatnot could improve what I have now so in the future it could be implemented for every season. I've recently been working through quite a few AFL player pages and noticed that there are tons of pages that need some updating. This project itself seems to be dead by the looks of the activity. Requested Move discussion on naming of football articles

There is currently a requested move discussion at Talk:Reception (American football) that is attempting to build a consensus on what disambiguation phrase should be used when necessary for gridiron football articles.
