Suggestion edit

For each area, can we have the current month's changes, followed by "previous months" in collapse boxes? That way one can look further back, mostly on one page. Right now it's spread across too many pages to be easy. FT2 (Talk | email) 19:31, 21 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Just the previous month, or several previous months? - Dank (push to talk) 19:34, 21 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Example:
Conduct policy changes
September 2009
August 2009
July 2009
Earlier
June 2009
May 2009
April 2009
For items prior to December 2008, see archives

This is both easier to maintain, and also very much easier to use. FT2 (Talk | email) 19:35, 21 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sure, not a problem. I'll group them maybe every 6 months. - Dank (push to talk) 19:43, 21 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
The other nice advantage is you can have just one archive page. Given that the last few months will be on the current page, the archives (several months old) won't be so often referenced. Collapse boxes make it very easy to review and find what one's looking for. So one archive page is all that's needed. Archiving involves moving the oldest collapse boxes from their place in the current page to the same section of the archive page, without any further editing or formatting. Moving notice of the Sept 1 change here edit

My usual update is now located on a subpage, WP:Update/1, and I'm doing something new: I won't automatically look at the diff between the last edit of last month and the last edit of the current month to generate the monthly update. Instead, I'll look at the history and the discussion, and select some page version from the last week of the month, if one of those versions seems to have broader support than the last version. (If none of those versions seems to have broad support, I'll use the last version of the month.) So far, I'm finding that very few pages have clear evidence of more support for a previous version. When I do have to make a choice, I'm looking to pick a version where there was actual evidence of support from the history and discussion, not the one that I predict to be the most stable or like the most. Of course, everyone is welcome to change or discuss my choices. I'm hoping this will make the Update a little more useful, since it won't give undue weight to whoever happened to get in the last edit of the month on a policy page, and I'm also hoping this will gently push in the direction of encouraging consensus-building on policy pages. I'm not (quite) arrogant enough to think that my judgment is better than anyone else's, and everyone is welcome to edit my work, or to create WP:Update/2 or WP:Update/3 and do your own version of a monthly update.

A related change: starting this month, I won't report on changes that only involve the addition or removal of a link, and I won't take links into account when selecting a page version for the Update. Which set of links is best seems like a separate question to me from which version of the text has consensus, if any.

I welcome suggestions now and always on how to make this work better.

template change edit

I noticed a change to the {{policy}} template in October. After some research, I couldn't find any talk, let alone consensus for the change from "documents" to "explains". I reverted the edits, and left a note on the talk page. That edit effectively changed the content of the entire list of "policies". If you believe my revert to be in error, please feel free to correct. I also noticed that WP:NAD does not appear to be listed at our official list of policies (Wikipedia:List of policies). I suspect that it's not the only policy page, but have not confirmed that. Am I correct that the "List of policies" page is not actually intended to list every policy, or is this something that needs to be addressed? Thank you. — Ched :  ?  06:06, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think that's why she called it a "bold edit". Equazcion (talk) 06:14, 11 Nov 2009 (UTC)
I don't personally keep up with WP:LOP, but it would be nice if it were in synch with our policies. On "documents" vs. "explains", that gets to the question of what a policy page is, or is supposed to be, and I don't think we've worked that out yet. Some tools we could use would be an RFC at WT:POLICY, and/or a policy report in the Signpost similar to the one I did for WP:SOCK a week ago where everyone is invited to give their own answers, a straw poll ... whatever you think will work. I'm happy to discuss here if you like, but the main action will probably be at WT:POLICY. - Dank (push to talk) 03:43, 12 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

WP:UPDATE newsletter edit

Can someone establish a newsletter than you can sign up to so that every quarter we see which policies have changed (sent to talk pages like the Wikipedia Signpost)? Regards, — Moe Epsilon 04:51, 23 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Be happy to, Moe, although as of last year I've just been covering the content policies (minus WP:IUP). Do you want to be alerted that the update has been done, or do you want a summary of the changes that show up in WP:Update? - Dank (push to talk) 05:01, 23 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
I just thought a segment of the community may like a newsletter style update of the quarter like the Signpost delivered to them. An update every three months or so once the quarter is complete and a summary is prepared would be good, thanks. I never knew this existed before today :P Regards, — Moe Epsilon 05:14, 23 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Can/should this article be renamed or moved somewhere else? edit

WP:Update and Help:Update seem to be somewhat valuable real estate. Talking about changes to policy pages from 2008 to 2016 doesn't seem to be a good place to start for an editor looking for some help on "update" from the WP perspective.

This page in a nutshell: This is a history of changes to content policy pages from 2008 to 2016. Deletion and enforcement policy pages were also covered before 2012. Please edit any of these pages as needed, or discuss on the talk page.

Cheers, Facts707 (talk) 09:11, 8 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

The question I think is whether there's a history of people linking to this page or talking about this page by its name, so that if the name were changed, people would get confused. There's also a general issue of whether any organization is best served by rewriting or remembering its past ... these are questions that are above my pay grade.
