Image recognition edit

Can we add some image recognition software to this please? It would be really useful on Commons to be able to find similar images, especially when categorising uncategorised images. Or to find a usable image on Commons that is similar to a less freely licensed image from elsewhere. ϢereSpielChequers 04:33, 31 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • User:WereSpielChequers, this is an excellent suggestion - I'm not sure that we would be able to have this functionality during this initial development phase. But I am making note of it if we're able to continue beyond our initial 6 month funding. Thank you for the feeback! I have it noted in our phabricator tasks, and our "future planning". I'll let you know if this will be feasible. Thanks again! JamieF (talk) 19:47, 29 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks JamieF, I have enough of an IT background to know that this is a non trivial ask, and also that once we had such a tool other uses would quickly be found for it. So I appreciate at least getting it into "future planning" ϢereSpielChequers 20:58, 29 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
I added a Phabricator task (see above). Once there's movement I'll let you know - knowing it's non-trivial, it's likely we could get it in. When it happens, we would definitely appreciate hearing other uses you may find! Thanks again! JamieF (talk) 21:47, 29 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Quality edit

When we have lots of relevant images it would be useful to have something that prioritised better quality images and deprioritised the dross. We have quality assessment on some images on Commons, plus loads of low resolution images that could be suspected to be low quality. Could this tool showed preference for images that the community judges to be good or featured, and de prioritised the lo res? ϢereSpielChequers 07:44, 31 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • User:WereSpielChequers We are working on weighting the returned results in order to avoid redundancies and give preference to prominent/higher quality images. We have it noted in our Phabricator tasks. We are also hoping to have a way to generate a prompt for when a high quality image is available , too. Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback! Wikiproject reports edit

Most Wikipedia articles are tagged to one or more WikiProjects, they range in subject area from MilHist to Poetry. I'm not sure what proportion of Wikipedians are active in WikiProjects, but activity fluctuates, especially when something useful appears in a WikiProject; Such as a list of articles tagged to that WikiProject and potentially better images now available on Commons, or just newer or more recently categorised ones. Template? edit

@Dominic:, @SuperHamster: – Do we have right template or hashtag to flag edits made with View it!? Gower (talk) 18:12, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Gower: We are not using any currently. The tool does not make edits on anyone's behalf in the current iteration; It just generates wiki code the user can publish themselves. So it is not toucing edit summaries either, currently. However, if there is some type of convention you think we should be following still, please let us know! Ok, thanks for your answer. I probably misunderstood something during our Zoom meeting about View it! Gower (talk) 18:08, 20 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
