Displaying tips on your userpage

If you would like to display the tip of the day on your userpage, here's how:

Edit your userpage and insert one or more of the following strings:

{{totd-random}} - this is the tip of the moment template, which automatically displays a different tip every time you enter a page it is on (to a maximum of one time per minute). If it doesn't update, try clearing your browser cache.
{{totd}} - the main userspace version of the tip of the day template, with border, centered in the middle of the page. Complete with inspirational lightbulb.
{{totd b}} - a more compact version of the above template. Useful for columns.
{{totd-tomorrow}} - this shows tomorrow's tip, and is used by Wikipedia tipsters to make sure that the tips never run out. If they did run out, a red link would show up on Wikipedia's Community Portal and Help Page, which would be very embarrassing. This template shows the redlink one day in advance, as an early-warning system.
{{Tip of the day}} - the borderless version, with lightbulb.
{{Tip of the day - community portal}} - the underlined-heading version used on the community portal. (No lightbulb).
{{totd2}} - the borderless version used on Wikipedia's Help page (which already has its own borders). (No lightbulb).
{{totd3}} - a purple box version, useful for displaying the tip in columns.
{{totd CP}} - like the help page version, but with a box. Spans the whole field (screen or column) that it is in.

Using Special:MyPage to make private links

Special:MyPage is a special link that is dynamically linked to the current user's userpage. So, whoever clicks on it will be taken to their own user page.

If you add a subpage to the link, then only you will be taken to your subpage of that name. Other users will be taken to the subpage of that name in their namespace (if it exists).

This makes the link "private" by only letting the correct user get to the page via that link. Other users will diverted to their own userspace.

The code [[Special:MyPage/To-do list|To-do list]] creates this: To-do list.

However, this only makes the link private, not the page itself. Others can still get to it via the search box or by creating a new link with its entire title.

To add this auto-updating template to your user page, use {{totd}}

Double click editing

When this setting is activated, double-clicking anywhere on a page does the same thing as clicking on the edit this page tab. This only works with browsers that support Javascript (but all of the latest versions of all of the major browsers do).

To enable this feature click the Preferences link at the top of any page. Then click the Editing tab. Then check the box next to Edit pages on double click. And finally, click the Save button.

Note: After saving, you have to clear your browser's cache to see the changes. Mozilla/Safari: hold down Shift while clicking Reload (or press Ctrl-Shift-R), IE: press Ctrl-F5, Opera/Konqueror: press F5.

Hello there (totd announcements and task list)...

  • A tip library is under construction at Wikipedia:Tips, and needs your help to complete. The unsorted tips at the bottom of that page need to be moved to the various subheadings, and the tips under each subheading need to be placed in the best logical order.

Where to write about current events

The current events portal is used to describe current world-wide events of note, not just in politics, but also in science, culture, technology, sports, entertainment and many other areas. The information in question should be added to any relevant articles as well. However, Wikipedia does not offer first-hand news reports on breaking stories (use Wikinews for that). Instead, the in the news section on our Main Page mentions and links to entries of timely interest that are (and this is crucial) nonetheless encyclopedia articles that have been updated to reflect an important current event. Non-Administrators can suggest items or changes to this Main Page section by editing the candidates page, from which administrators will update the live template from time to time.

To add this template to your user page, use {{Totd-random}}.

Discussion

This will definitely save a lot of work, or at least provide a default in case no one bothers to write new tips. They'll need to be monitored for relevance and be updated in cases in which they no longer apply, but that's pretty obvious.

So the tips will be displayed in the same order, year after year? That'll create some deja vu!  . Is there any way to randomize the tips so that on any particular day the same tip is displayed for everybody throughout the whole day?  The Transhumanist   23:50, 6 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Anything is possible. My first thought was to do something like that - daily randomization - but a concern for high profile pages is reviewability. That's why I went with a more simple and predictable approach. It's also always possible to mix up - switch around - content if anyone want to do that. Rfrisbietalk 00:37, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
