Preference setting edit

Note although many users do use the preference setting to indicate the pronouns they wish to be used to refer to them, strictly speaking the preference is there for a different purpose. Its intended use is to specify how the MediaWiki software will refer to you in its messages. Presumably most people would have the same preference for both situations, but I know of one editor who didn't care about what the software used, but didn't want to specify a preference that would be used by others to refer to them. As I understand it, "undefined" is not an option so MediaWiki always has some way to refer to you using pronouns (if I recall correctly, trying to avoid them entirely was deemed difficult to ensure for all languages). isaacl (talk) 21:24, 10 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
