• GaiaGirls's suggestion text: It starts out with "Science shows that..." This is not a good example to set. In general, the example Earth article is informal and not representative of the kind of language expected from Wikipedia articles these days, but the 'science shows' bit is especially problematic. In a science-related article, we don't want to bald assertions of truth (essentially, "it is known that...") taking the superficial appearance of in-text attribution.

  Interestingly I used text from Simple English Wikipedia and did not alter it significantly. I suppose Simple WP has looser guidelines on attribution/truth assertions. I will give this some thought.

  It's tricky, because you want an example article that any new user can engage with even without particular knowledge of the topic, but you also want to set realistic examples of what good content looks like. For the "Science shows" bit, it's not so much asserting facts that is the problem, but rather lumping the source of those facts into the catchall of "science". It's phraseology that on Wikipedia would immediately raise red flags for science editors.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 16:41, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

• Taggy challenge: the message here seems to be not to push back against users who are inappropriately bitey or unpleasant in tone. Taggy's message is an example of a not-uncommon type of interaction, but one that it's useful to point out as unhelpful and not a good way to treat newcomers. The 'little heart to heart' response does indeed fail to address the sourcing concern (as noted in the 'wrong answer' message), but the right answer doesn't include the good concept from that response of also addressing Taggy's tone. Taggy's response confirms that they were in the wrong with the tone, but in many cases rude users will not correct their behavior unless they get called out a bit for it. Maintaining civility often requires more than simply turning the other cheek as in the 'right' answer here.

  This is a very critical point of the game. I wanted to introduce editors to the propspect of incivility without overwhelming them. The interaction with Taggy models being cool, and demonstrates that Taggy is not trying to be a dick, but just having a rough time. I think that sending a stronger message to Taggy in the game, one that had more push-back might risk encouraging editors to focus on tone rather than content in their replies. I will give this some more serious thought though, it's really a significant juncture in the game.

• The 'back' links in the tour boxes on all of the answers pages take the user back to the step before the challenge. The expected behavior will be to return to the challenge page itself to select a different answer.

  Ah, nice catch...that's a known bug, and it's because the Challenge Question and Answer pages happen on the same step of the tour. Sadly, despite a lot of tinkering, I don't have a simple fix here, except to remove the back button entirely from all Challenge pages.

Mission 7

• The instructions for adding section formatting and images are unnecessarily tedious. The user does not need to do these tasks 5+ times each.

  You mean that user should only be asked to do one section or one image? I wanted the article to be completely formatted as a polished end-product, so that's why there's repetition. I will think about whether it could be tightened a bit for efficiency, while still creating a nice looking end game. (I actually reduced the number of tasks here, but may not have gone as far as you'd like).

  One or two sections, yeah. And one or two images. Adding all those at once is not a realistic task anyway, since the headers are there already but not formatted. Maybe it could be adjusted so that the player is formatting a single newly-added section, with all the headers except the last one already in the proper form. Searching the text for each of those headers in turn seemed to me extremely tedious, much more so than other instructions.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 16:28, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

General thoughts

• One way to get around several issues related to time would be to frame the adventure as a trip back in time, perhaps to prevent a terrible catastrophe caused by a bad Wikipedia article about Earth. (Earth was just blown up because of some bad, policy-violating content that misled an alien race... or something.) That way, the timestamps on the mock page histories don't have to be an endless stream of {{currentdate}}, and it would explain why the Earth article is really simple. Then time can zoom forward a bit to show how the article developed in the meantime during Mission 7. And it would add a bit more purpose to the whole adventure, which otherwise doesn't drive anywhere in particular.

  I thought a lot about the game's 'backstory', and whether or not there should be some motivational context and history for the story. In the end I decided that fabricating a motivation to play the game would add an element of drama that I didn't want, one which would interfere with the key quest of the game which is to improve an article on Wikipedia. In this sense the game is more interactive guided tour than conventional quest. I will give this some more thought, about whether a backstory could distract or trivilize, or whether it would deepen and drive user engagement.

  Maybe something to test both ways. The more story that's in it, the more the story will turn off some people. But a good story could also make it much more engaging to a lot of people. I think just by setting it up as a game with a space fantasy setting, it's already going to be appealing to some and really unappealing to others, so my intuition is that going from just a theme to an actual story would be worth it. But it's hard to say until you get more feedback from actual newcomers. On that note, I encourage you to set up a better system for seeking feedback at the end. You could make a short "what did you think about the adventure" post the last step of the last mission. I did something like that for the student trainings, and it was extremely valuable in finding ways to improve it early on. instruction placement

@Ocaasi:: Many of the steps in the tours have message boxes that appear beneath the page text. It's a nice feature, especially when it causes the page to scroll down to reveal that box. The one issue is that the boxes show up well beneath the main body, because they are attached beneath the #footer-info-copyright. Can you attach them instead to #content.mw-body so that they aren't so far beneath the main body (and #wpTextbox1 for boxes in the edit window)?--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 19:40, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Hey Ross Hill, Sounds could definitely not be played automatically, that would be seen as disruptive and intrustive. However this was a neat suggestion I got from Sage Ross, to place an optional sound into the celebratory points of the game. I tried it on the mission 7 endpage, see what you think: Wikipedia:TWA/7/End. Other possible places for these sounds would be after successfully answering the galactic challenges. I'm torn whether or not it is cheesy and would be overkill though, even as something people opt in to playing. I think the finale sound is fitting without being too much. What do you think? The History page and sounds

Hi Ocaasi,

I just went through most of the game and I think that this was quite fun! As always there are of course some minor tweaks that would make it even better:

1. I think that it was a bit confusing with the History page part. In the list is says "You" instead of my user name. I assume that this is for technical reasons, but perhaps it could say "YOUR USERNAME" or something?
2. In the history list there were comments added to my edits (edit summaries) that I had not written. This, I believe, would be a bit confusing for a newbie as it would indicate that comments are added automatically/magically somehow.
3. There are also some problems with the sound files as they do not open automatically when you arrive to a new page. If they would start automatically this would enhance the experience.

Finally, I was wondering when it would be possible to create local versions on other language versions?

auto-confirm states

In this wiki auto confirm is got by being for 4 days and make 10 edits... before that users can't save right away before they preview. How did I actually... (until the first REAL edit in the tour, 1 edit is made automatically by the tour... only one.) does the tour grant that right for users??!! Facing problems with Modern skin

I just went through the Wikipedia Adventure. My main purpose was to review the work that you all have done to see if there are any bugs and problems. I use the Modern skin and Firefox 26.0. Initially when the adventurer has to edit a page by clicking the the edit link button, I was not able to click it and the mouse cursor turned into the highlighting or editing mode instead of the hand which should have shown up while going to click a link (screen-shot of problem). I faced the problem starting 2 times and then didn't. I had to manually enter the edit link in the address bar to continue the adventure. The same thing happens when I view this page too. Even though I can't see the edit button, I can still click it. This is however not possible while the adventure is on. I hope you all fix this soon but I don't think that many newbies will even know about the modern skin.

Also, it would have been better if the music starts playing automatically (if it is possible). Can you please give me a list of the sound files that were used?

Hey Jayadevp13, thanks for the feedback. We built The Wikipedia Adventure primarily for the default setting a new user would face, so Vector skin and Source (rather than Visual) editor. Frankly, we didn't even attempt to make it compatible with settings that the vast majority of new users wouldn't be using, as TWA is a very new-user centered tutorial.

Some ideas to improve

I found this game very ludic and fun. Why not add supplementary quests, for learn more again? If a contributor wants to know more on a specific subject, he can do the quest for learn. For example : -User page quest -Editing war stopping quest (with a false editing war, of course) -Vandalism stopping quest (with false vandals, as the false users of the original TWA) -etc. Also, why not put this awesome game to other Wikimedia projects. - The art design - The humor, and at times over the top "Aren't you great?" and "Isn't Wikipedia the best thing in the world?" atmosphere to the adventure. - It forced me to use the editing buttons (I had never used them before)

What I didn't like

-In Section 3, step 3, the "Search for typos button": The button didn't indicate that I should have searched for typos before clicking on it. -I didn't know why some of the buttons had stars (*) on them -Towards the end being told to hit the edit button was tedious. (E.g step 15 of mission 6 the prompt "Click EDIT so you can add an inline citation.") I would have preferred to be taken directly to the the Edit page. - That wikilinks were introduced so late in the tutorial. For some people this is the defining feature of Wikipedia so I felt it should have been introduced sooner than later. -When told to copy a multiple choice reply for the first time in mission 2, (step 5) it wasn't immediately obvious I was meant to copy the text contained in the prompt, perhaps change the prompt to: "Copy the best reply from the box below and paste it into the editing text box, at the bottom below Will's message to you" and then surround the text ":Thanks so much for your friendly welcome User:WillKomen. I can't wait to start editing!..." with a box.

-The art design could have benefited from further diversity. -Could have incorporated the Show Preview button.

(Again towards the end) explicitly telling users to press the SAVE button each time an edit was made.

• In the article about Earth, if we use American English, these words need to be replaced: urbanisation --> urbanization, vapour --> vapor. On the contrary, if we use Britannic English we need to change these words: kilometers --> kilometres, center --> centre, traveling --> travelling.
• in the final page of the videogame, the statistics bar are overlapped with missions' links.
• a page that shows Commons (or a simulated one) and let the user to search for pictures before to add them to the article.

• More than 4 years ago, in it.wikipedia we created this guide for beginners. The initial idea was similar: to create a "safe" environment where the user can learn the basics of Wikipedia. I think it could be great to use there the popup technique that you used for TWA. More in general, these technique could be applied to a lot of Wikipedia guides to make them more user-friendly.

What I liked

I thought it gave a great overview of the basics of editing articles.

The "lounge" was cool and I enjoyed the second piece of music.

What I didn't like

Most of the "multiple choice" answers were too simplistic and obvious to actually teach anything.

The text box should have been movable: I couldn't read the pages I was looking at most of the time.

I thought this was a really great and succinct introduction to Wikipedia.

What I didn't like

I didn't actually want all the badges that I got, since I felt like they cluttered up my user page (and I've since removed them). I get that it's a sign of positive encouragement, but I think this could be accomplished through fewer badges. Maybe just one cool badge could be awarded if you finished all the missions available.

What I wanted more of

I liked every opportunity I had to choose the 'best possible' response in a situation. Those were good delineations of community norms.

I'd be curious to know how you're introducing this to potential new users. Is it going to pop up every time someone creates a new account? Does it do that already?

Irritating and patronising

This "adventure" is really patronising. I didn't come across it until I had been editing for five years or more. If it had been inflicted on me earlier, I might have been pissed off enough to give up on editing. Who do you think it is aimed at? Maproom (talk) 23:22, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Maproom, I'm sorry you didn't care for the game. We've surveyed new editors extensively--nearly 1000 have finished it so far, and few have said anything but that they liked it. In fact, the only two serious grievances came from very experienced editors like yourself. It's possible that the game is simply so beneath your skillset that it seems patronising, but that for a complete newcomer, it's just the kind of tone that seems accessible and entertaining. A more advanced version should be created for semi-experienced editors. I went through the entire game hoping for some useful tips, but found everything too basic. What I liked

Covers the basics, mentions overlinking, pretty picture, friendly, provides links to additional resources. User references in the article "history" are a nice touch.

What I didn't like

Imaginary friends are kind of creepy. I guess they're necessary to simulate a collaborative environment, but it expected this (1:20-1:49) to happen all the time. Maybe add an age question in the beginning and replace them with more abstract explanations?

The dialog window gets in the way a few times (it blocked the save button once and text I was supposed to edit a few times). There should be a way to move it around.

Dunno, maybe some reactivity for non-standard responses (like when the user doesn't add the text they're supposed to add and so on)? Probably hard to do...

What was unnecessary

Some smileys; there should probably be an option to opt out of auto-adding those badges onto the userpage.

Mission 2 I think mentions that my contributions are "just from my user page and talk" which (being a long time user before this tutorial) it's not. Maybe reword it so it says something like "Unless you have been editing before this tutorial, then it's just from your user page and talk"

mission 5 step 7 ("Which sentence best summarizes Verifiability") the floating box ("Challenge yourself") should be fixed in place.

For some reason the image function wasn't working completely in mission 7. (I pasted the file names in the prompt box but it wouldn't let me actually insert them in to the article)

What I wanted more of

explanation of certain templates like for example when creating a page about a famous person, how do you make the box to the right with their details. And how to link pages to certain categories.

What was unnecessary

The badges and the tutorial populated messages seem like a kinda lame thing to have on my page <:D.

A nice thorough tutorial :). Was a bit hard to find though. Maybe it needs it's own advertisement on the front page or at the top (If you're not already linking new users to it). That or maybe an obvious banner when you go to look up help editing.

Sometimes while editing, I would go ahead and save the page before the "box" told me so. Seems the system had trouble if I was a step ahead without "letting it know" and I would sometimes have to restart the mission.

Bug

I'm in the process of testing. I spotted a bug: when creating one's user page, if you save before proceeding with the dialog box, after the page saves, the TWA interface pops up again but you can't advance further because it tells you to save the page first (which you already have done. I had the same problem. I think I went back and edited again. A new user may know they are supposed to save edits, already, or they may wait for directions... Any ideas on fixing this? Maybe a note to not save it, yet? —PC-XT+ 06:17, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

I finished testing. Generally, I think that it seems effective in pointing out the key skills for editing Wikipedia; I am not concerned that newbies are not bombarded with the finer points of eg square brackets for links, as they can notice it as they go. The lack of mention of ref templates is a concern. Also the tone is pitched towards a younger demographic. I don't think adult newbies need to be constantly told how amazing they are – a simple "that's correct, well done" would suffice. Similarly you get badges every other click, which IMO demeans them; maybe just one per mission?

Generally, though, good work; if this is effective at attracting good contributors, which I think it should do well (better than the current situation at any rate), I'm happy with it, since it covers most of the basic skill set. • confusing: "Start the adventure --->". The arrow (in the image) is confusing, makes me think I should click there but I can't.

• warning: warn users not to use the "Edit beta" tab; if you do, you won't be able to see/click the save button.
• confusing: when presented with a selection, the popup says "challenge yourself" and "you can learn as much from trying." However, after I make a selection the popup returns (saying the same thing) and the flow of interaction moves to the page itself which gives a message and "Continue on the adventure" which is very confusing. The pop-up should continue to be directing the meta-flow or say "Success, please click one of the selection on the page."
• pop-up is in the way on the NPOV paste into the edit box.
• confusing: "Copy your message at the bottom," should say "Copy this message in the bottom of the edit box."
• confusing: the "copy" text in general could be improved... "select the text below and copy it (ctrl-c) so you can paste it into the editing window."
• typo, remove comma: "What should we tell Taggy so that they know you understand sourcing policy, and were on your way to adding that info (as soon as you learned how)?"
• confusing: some of the chatty dialogs are confusing, why would I click on a question "Pretty, neat huh?" to proceed?

What I liked

It teaches you how to use the editor and some of the basic rules you need to know to be an asset to Wikipedia.

What I didn't like

This really doesn't need to be 7 missions. The name "adventure" makes it seem like it's going to be some crazy wild ride through a bunch of portals, where we would learn lots of cool new stuff as we learn to use Wikipedia, but we end up with something fairly underwhelming.

What I wanted more of

Why not just make the course "Wikipedia for beginners" and then quickfire teach people how to use the editor: editing text, using sources, referencing the sources, etc. And then once people know the basics, take them through a bunch of easy portals. Like animals and plants, food, hobbies, etc. Give them experience editing a wide array of topics and then let them loose.

Perfectly designed for new-users. It teaches new user the basic techniques in editing and some basic policies and is very user-friendly

Instructions is a little bit confusing in Mission 1.

The adventure needs more promotion. Many new users will not know the adventure exist unless they were welcomed by that particular template. My suggestion is that the project can send a talk page message to new users, similar to the Teahouse message.

The interactive game had some good examples of how to cite and edit pages. It was much to simple for a beginner though

Once I got the hang of it the going was smooth.

...The page was never lost. I could always go back to user talk page and click on where I left of in the mission.

It was a great tool for beginners. I really liked the stars and the celebration music at the end of each mission.

Sometimes, when I had to add the summary comment and save, the game stacked and I had to start from the begging the section.

What I liked

It is a very simple tutorial that allows to have a look at all the functions of Wikipedia. Feels like a game and makes it easy to learn.

What I didn't like

I didn't like the fact that sometimes they were some bugs. Sometimes it blocked and I had to edit and save several times in order to get to the next page.

It would be good to be able to go even more into details as an option.

Opened multiple browser windows (10 to be exact), the window that I wasn't allowed to close without starting over kept blocking the edit box and making it harder to complete tasks, didn't show me how to get rid of that annoying red box up top, some of the sections were too drawn out with multiple clicks.
