Life reconstruction of Titanis
Life reconstruction of Titanis

Titanis is a genus of Phorusrhacidae, or "terror birds". The extinct family of large, predatory birds originated in South America and inhabited parts of the present-day United States during the Pliocene. Like all phorusrhacids, Titanis had elongated hind limbs, a thin pelvis, proportionally small wings, and a large skull with a hooked beak. Estimates placed Titanis at 1.4 to 2 meters (4.6 to 6.6 ft) in height and over 300 kilograms (660 lb) in body mass. Phorusrhacids are thought to have been ground predators or scavengers, apex predators that dominated Cenozoic South America. They may have swallowed small prey whole or targeted larger prey with repeated strikes of the beak. Titanis likely preyed on mammals such as the extinct armadillo relatives Holmesina and Glyptotherium, equids, tapirs, capybaras, and other Pliocene herbivores. Titanis is unique among phorusrhacids in that it is the only one known from North America, crossing over from South America during the Great American Interchange. (Full article...)

Voyager 1

edit

I know that the Voyager 1 entry was removed, but I re-added the information because it was notable, considering that Voyager 1 is currently the most distant man-made object. --Ixfd64 05:55, 2005 September 4 (UTC)

I'd say it's a tough call, but if it was up to me, I'd take out Voyager, since there are already enough mentions of it throughout the calendar; this is only the launch date but we have every other date for it already in there... The other 5 are too important to cut...! Codex Sinaiticus 22:19, 4 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

  • All right, I've commented out the Voyager 1 entry for now. In that case, it can be easily restored if necessary. --Ixfd64 22:28, 2005 September 4 (UTC)
For next year, we can move Great Fire of London to September 2 to make room for Voyager 1. Alternatively, we can cycle events in and out throughout the day..... Wish we can show a different set of anniversaries every time the MainPage is refreshed/reloaded... -- PFHLai 08:38, 2005 September 5 (UTC)

the first President of the Republic of Texas

edit
Moved from WP:ERRORS.

Not sure this is an error on the Main Page, could just be a conflict, but it says Sam Houston was elected as the first President of the Republic of Texas, with a wikilink at President to List of Presidents of the Republic of Texas, which lists him as the second President of Texas. Maybe he was the first elected President? Anyway, one of these items needs to be corrected. Thanks, Ruhrfisch 02:25, 5 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

The main page really should be fixed. Been a long time since 8th grade Tx history, but this popped out at me right away. -- Kendrick7 19:36, 5 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
And not to get too nit-picky, but Burnet was elected, just not by popular vote. -- Kendrick7 20:44, 5 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Edit request on 5 September 2013

I am alarmed by the declination of wikipedia's integrity to the point of 'on this day including information about some disney character named 'Oswald the rabbit', yet including absolutely nothing about the 36th anniversary of the launch of Voyager 1, the farthest man made object from Earth and arguably one of mankind's most remarkable and resilient scientific achievements. Thank you for turning a cold shoulder to science, yet again, to pander to the lowest common denominator. 66.87.98.214 (talk) 17:15, 5 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Not everything can appear every year and there is certainly no policy of turning a cold shoulder to science. In fact, as far as I'm concerned, the more articles that are written and improved about science and scientific achievements, the better - and that would help to "balance out", as it were, articles about popular culture.
