One of T2's sister ships, T3

T2 was a torpedo boat of the Royal Yugoslav Navy commissioned on 11 August 1914. Originally a 250t-class torpedo boat of the Austro-Hungarian Navy, she saw active service during World War I, performing convoy, patrol, escort, minesweeping and minelaying tasks, anti-submarine operations, and shore bombardment missions. Present in the Bocche di Cattaro during the short-lived mutiny by Austro-Hungarian sailors in early February 1918, members of her crew raised the red flag but took no other mutinous actions. The boat was part of the escort force for the Austro-Hungarian dreadnought Szent István when that ship was sunk by Italian torpedo boats in June 1918. Following Austria-Hungary's defeat in 1918, the boat was allocated to the Navy of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, which later became the Royal Yugoslav Navy, and was renamed T2. During the interwar period, Yugoslav naval activity was limited by reduced budgets. Worn out after twenty-five years of service, T2 was scrapped in 1939. (Full article...)

Victorious Youth

The Victorious Youth, also known as Atleta di Fano, Lisippo di Fano, or Getty Bronze, is a Greek bronze sculpture, made between 300 and 100 BCE, currently displayed at the Getty Villa Museum in Pacific Palisades, California. It is believed to have originally depicted an Olympic runner who held a victor's palm branch in his left arm. His right hand reaches to touch the winner's olive wreath on his head.

Spork?

edit
Moved from Talk:Main Page. 20:38, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Why is the anniversay of the filing of the patent for a "spork" mentioned? Come on, this is an encyclopedia, I'm sure there are a ton of far more important anniversaries. Harley peters 17:43, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I guess it's been sporked. Cat-five 18:05, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
This sort of blatant pro-spork bias has been a part of Wikipedia for years, and I, for one, am tired of it. You never see us commemorate the anniversary of the knife, or chopsticks, or even salad tongs - always the spork. Is is any wonder that 100% of the people from non-spork-using countries despise us? We need an immediate ban on spork creation anniversaries for at least the next few months, even as long as a year if that's what it takes to counter Wikipedia's pervasive spork bias. --Gavia immer 18:59, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Back to being semi-serious I do not see how the spork patent filing is really a big enough deal to deserve a front page mention unless we're really that devoid of content that there's nothing else to fill that space. Cat-five 19:12, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I dont see how the spork is important enough to even have it mentioned in August 11's article. :/ Rafy 22:19, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I agree, this is fairly ridiculous. Front page of Wikipedia is not the place for whimsy based around inherently amusing hybrid cutlery. 89.100.128.72 22:48, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I personally believe the spork is one of the greatest inventions of mankind. (actually being semi-semi-serious here) ..... EWS23 (Leave me a message!) 07:06, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I removed spork. Grouf(talk contribs) 16:29, 7 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thermopylae

edit

I'm removing the Battle of Thermopylae as the article doesn't give any sources indicating why we should believe the battle happened on this day. —Angr 12:34, 11 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

1973

It may be a little early for mentioning this, but I think next year we should acknowledge the 40th anniversary of the birth of hip hop music with the performance by DJ Kool Herc at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue. Relatively obscure but it gave birth to a massive movement in music and culture--T1980 (talk) 17:26, 21 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

2023 rationale

edit
  • Not many were eligible from the early years, so to compensate for that I made births/deaths heavy on earlier years.
  • I kept Enid Blyton as she was literally the only female thing I could find that was eligible.
  • Need more people that died on this day, literally only two.
  • Pictured DJ Kool Herc to celebrate the 50th anniversary.
