Front page of project

• Now that I've cleaned stuff up a bit, what do you guys think should go on the front page? Something from the tasks page? What tools and such should be the most easily accessible? Should I move the templates to a separate tab in the nav bar, keeping the front page simple, clean and welcoming? Maybe having code-y things there is intimidating for novice editors.
• Secondly, are there any reference templates that could go in that section? Like {{toponymie}} etc.? What-all do you guys use?
• Finally, does anyone want to help assess all the unassessed articles under the scope of the project and determine a few priority articles for future FA/GA candidacy? - Sweet Nightmares 17:53, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

Société des designers graphiques du Québec has been tagged Ad and NN. I find it ludicrous that anyone would think the only French-language design association in Canada could be non-notable. Changes to WP:QC

Hello fellow Quebecophiles! As you may have noticed...

I have recently made the following changes:

• Created a navigation bar
• Moved things from the home page to the appropriate sections of the navigation bar, such as the new "network" and "help & tools" pages
• Archived issues on the notice board, discussions on this discussion board, as well as the members who have been active since 2013
• Placed a warning message on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Quebec alerting users to direct discussion to the notice board, in an effort to revive the notice board
• Set up bots for tasks and article alerts, which are currently located here
• Created an ad for the project, visible to the right

Along with other miscellaneous things. Please take a few minutes to look around on the project and give your perspective below. Feel free to air any complaints or suggestions regarding this overhaul; I'm still learning, after all, and there are still changes that ought to be made, which brings me to...

Things that remain to be seen:

• Create some auxiliary features for the project, such as a welcome message for recruiting new members and a WP:QC-specific distinction to recognize good edits
• Expand infrastructure for the "requests" page to make it easier for novice or casual Wikipedians to contribute to the project, then transclude it on the notice board
• Consolidate the tasks, alerts, to-do list, assessment, and so on, and find an appropriate location for them (the notice board, most likely)
• Define what kinds of discussion are appropriate between the notice board and its talk page, then guide visitors to post inquiries in the correct places

I am blown away by how good the project looks now. As the noticeboard talk page will be the primary discussion location, I would recommend creating an automated archive since some of the posts here date back as far as 2004. Mkdw^talk 22:21, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

I want to translate this article. My problem is: what should its title be? Maple Mountain? Érable Mountain? l'Acropole des Draveurs? Raftsmen's Acropolis? - Sweet Nightmares 16:51, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

The official name of the mountain is montagne des Érables and l'Acropole des Draveurs is simply a rock wall of the mountain. If I follow the rule of the Translation Bureau [1] we should not translate a toponym with a grammatical particle. So I imagine it sould be Montagne des Érables and L'Acropole des Draveurs Rock Wall. It's like on the parkway of La Mauricie National Park, we have Lac du Fou but Édouard Lake on the road signalisation. By experience, adding the literal translation between brackets is always welcome for readers unfamilliar with french. Bien reçu, Fralambert! I was hesitant primarily because I interpret "mountain" to indeed be a particle. For example, English speakers refer to Mont Orford as Mount Orford (even its title differs from the bolded term in the lede!). However, there appears to be less linguistic confusion the further away from the borders you travel, so I will move forward with Montagne des Érables, with a redirect from l'Acropole des Draveurs and a note about it being only a face of the mountain. - Sweet Nightmares 14:51, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

Mont Orford is a good exemple of a name without particule (de, de la, du, des, à, aux, etc.). There is no problem to translate the generic it for Mount Orford --Fralambert (talk) 02:30, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Dollar Cinema

We seem to be missing an article on this. As the only theatre [2] showing "The Interview" and being in the news many other times over the years, it seems like an article should exist, as it is covered as a news item much more than the average theatre, or even most of the top achalandage cinemas -- 65.94.40.137 (talk) 01:43, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

• I'm not terribly impressed with the quality of the discussion -- no one seems to talk about whether or not there are WP:RS, only their feelings on the matter -- but see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dollar Cinema (Montreal, Quebec).     • I'd be careful about recreating the article on that basis. That's a one-off (non-)news event. But I do recall seeing an in-depth Gazette (I think) piece a few years back on the theatre, its business model, etc. Or maybe it was in one of the weeklies. Hi all, wish I had less divisive or stereotypical topic to discuss, but I've been trying to make Quebec referendum, 1995 into a half-decent article. My problem has generally been that (1) I only have two sources on hand and (2) While I love Quebec, I am English Canadian and may have a blind spot or two. The Canadian MoS is pretty vague about cases like this, but I would say that if the city standard does not take the accent, neither should any articles relating to its infrastructure. On the other hand, we are talking about a proper name here, not e.g. "highways in Montreal." Its English website uses the accent, as do most of the entries in Termium. Having read the discussion at Mirabel's talk page, if I had to pronounce myself, I'd say I'm weakly in favor of keeping the accent. Honestly though, surely people arguing over an accent with proper redirects can find more productive things to do? I like organization as much as the next woman, but there is so much missing on Wikipedia! If you ask me, it's petty battles like this that drain peoples' energy and turn away potential users. - SweetNightmares 14:26, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

New 10,000 Challenge for Canada

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. Renaming of francophone school districts in Quebec

Effective June 15, 2020, the Quebec government abolished the elected francophone school boards and replaced them with Centres de services scolaire with appointed boards of directors. Should the old school boards be moved into Category:Former school districts and new articles be created for the school centres that replaced the elected boards? There are lots of historic school boards in Quebec for which we don't yet have articles, such as most of the confessional (Catholic or Protestant) boards that were abolished around 2000. I'd like to know why are the articles pertaining to street names in Montreal, and the province more broadly, are all anglicized.

Even most anglophones refer to the streets by their French names. I've rarely heard anyone say Saint-Hubert Street or Berri Street, it's Rue Saint-Hubert and Rue Berri, or just Berri. Certainly among younger generations that's the norm.

If you look at articles about streets in France for example, the articles use their francophone names.

I'm proposing that this should be applied to Montreal as well, it's more authentic and accurate. ---StevenBjerke97 talk 17:49, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

It's obvious. And the example you gave by comparing to the streets of France is quite relevant. Anyway, that won't happen for some time. For many anglophones, Quebec is a bilingual territory and they will refuse, whereas in France, it is the French name that is given, EVERYWHERE, even where French is not the majority mother tongue (territory of overseas, metropolitan areas with high immigration). --Æpherys (talk) 09:11, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

I guess I can't speak for everyone but I'm an anglo in Montreal (albeit not born here) who generally agrees that things should be de-colonized and francisé. Why does Montreal still have a street called Christophe-Colomb? Why is there a street called City Councillors and not Conseillers de ville as it was in the past? (spoiler: answer here, cause I just looked it up)

Conversationally, people don't really use "rue" or "avenue" etc. either, though. "Street" is how it translates into English, and I think there are considerations to be made for tourists, students, and other people who might be curious about Quebec/the French diaspora without having to learn about the intricacies of French transportation nomenclature. - SweetNightmares 01:17, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

Main page: User:Headbomb/unreliable

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Robert-Cliche Regional County Municipality has changed names to Beauce-Centre Regional County Municipality

Hello,

Following today's publication of the Gazette officielle du Québec (Issue 31, 30 July 2022), the Regional County Municipality has changed name from Robert-Cliche, to Beauce-Centre.

The articles under this project will need to be updated to reflect this, and pages renamed.

I currently don't have enough edits on enwiki to do some of these changes.

Proposed deletion: National parishes (Québec)

FYI, the article National parishes (Québec) has been proposed for deletion (WP:PROD). The first sentences summarize the subject thusly:

• ”National parishes in Québec are Latin Rite Catholic parishes that serve the different ethnic communities in Montreal, such as the Irish, Italian, Portuguese, and Chinese. They are distinguished from territorial parishes that serve the French-speaking majority, and also from Eastern-rite parishes that serve ethnic communities associated with Eastern Catholic Churches…”

The nominator wrote this summary of their concerns:

• ”…this is an original research essay on the ethnic heritage of several Quebec parishes. No particular notability relative to national parishes everywhere else; the subject barely ekes out notability in for the national churches in Rome, much less Quebec. No, this is not a suitable merge candidate—there is no verifiable information to merge to any other article.”

Right now, the article needs reliable sources to prove this is really a system as opposed to standard diocesan churches offering Mass in languages besides French. That or it needs to be deleted as someone’s unverifiable, original research

Greetings, Today I removed this article's Stub tag. The Rater assessment tool (ORES prediction 55 percent) recommends C-Class. For now I upgraded assessment to Start-Class as I did add two CN tags that need attention. If anyone here would like to improve this article, go for it.
