The foregoing defines a source as primary or secondary without regard to how it is used in Wikipedia. However, a secondary source may become primary specifically because of how it is used in Wikipedia. This happens when the source is used in any of several ways:

• The source's author, editor, creator, or leader is the subject of the use.
• The source's scholarly method, including scientific method, is the subject of the use.
• The source's own literary style is the subject of the use.
• The source itself is the subject of the use.

A source that is ordinarily secondary but becomes primary because of particular uses is still secondary for all other uses.

Policy: When a source is primary for the subject of its use, apply the policy on primary sources. When a source is secondary for the subject of its use, apply the policy on secondary sources.
