I've started this page in response to Talk:Iron Age in India#Title change, in the hope that in time we may create some guidelines on the question when to use India/Indian subcontinent/South Asia. Joshua Jonathan -Let's talk! 19:51, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

- No, you were right. After suggesting we close the barn door before the horse flees, why would you suggest doing the opposite? Though it probably is after the horse is out of the barn, because people have been writing about that region of the world on Wikipedia for quite some time now. However, I'm skeptical that writing an essay and holding the discussion here will be effective, as few will be aware of it. How about at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (geographic names)? Specifics and neutrality edit
Maybe it's a matter of specifics: articles dedicated to the whole of South Asia, in which case "South Asia" can be used; and articles on specific periods in specific parts of South Asia, in which case specific contemporary names (Pakistan, India) or historial names can be used. See, for example, Gautama Buddha, which states that 'Buddha was born in the Shakya republic, present-day Nepal', and explains why we do not exclusively use the present-day name "Nepal." I also think that "South Asia" is more neutral than "India" or "Indian subcontinent." In the case of historical periods, either "South Asia" or historical names can be used.
