Discussion of this redirect

(archives, talk, WikiProject pages, etc. not included)

Linking Wikipedia:File namespace to one of these pages creates a self-redirect back to itself. – Wbm1058 (talk) 22:15, 6 February 2013 (UTC) updated Wbm1058 (talk) 23:53, 6 February 2013 (UTC) (removed dab)Reply

Pages about File namespace edit

Wikipedia:Image use policy edit

This should not redirect to Wikipedia:Image use policy. That's about Images, not the file namespace. There are files other then Images. Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 23:09, 6 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Revert edit

Regarding tease reverts how is this redirect different then Wikipedia:Main namespace, Wikipedia:User namespace, Wikipedia:Category namespace, Wikipedia:Portal namespace, and Wikipedia:Book namespace? Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 07:29, 14 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

They should all go to Wikipedia:Namespace since the redirs are expected to be lead to info about namespaces. That page then goes on to the ones listed. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 07:39, 14 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
That's a WP:LOCALCONSENSUS argument. If you want to do that I suggest you nominate all those redirects at WP:RFD, but until there is consensus to change the long-standing practice for these "namespace" redirects I'm reverting. Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 07:46, 14 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'm with E.H.C. on this. First, note at the top of this page, there already was a fairly recent RfD on this issue. Second, read the rest of the discussion above. Your change creates a redirect loop, or a self-redirect back to itself. Sending specific links to Wikipedia:File namespace and Wikipedia:Image namespace back to the File namespace section of Wikipedia:Namespace, in hopes that from that page the reader will then go on to the ones listed, won't work. They will be stuck in a loop and will never get to Help:Files by clicking on links on Wikipedia:File namespace. Wbm1058 (talk) 17:37, 14 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
But you indirectly make a valid point in that the Help:Files page doesn't adequately define the terms namespace and file namespace. In fact, it lacks a lead section entirely, unless {{nutshell}} passes for a mini-lede. Though I'm not sure what the style is for pages in help namespace in that regard. Wikipedia:Files would be the obvious candidate for a more technical discussion of file namespace, but we don't have an article there. You also make a good point in that there may be a need for a Wikipedia:Files (disambiguation) page, and made a reasonable first draft of that (which we've reverted). We could hatnote to such a dab. Wikipedia:Files was a redirect to Wikipedia:Media (a related dab) for seven years, between October 2005–October 2012. For two years before that, the redirect was to Wikipedia:Multimedia. – Wbm1058 (talk) 18:09, 14 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia:Multimedia was an article (last version), before it was merged to Wikipedia:Media in October 2005. Wikipedia:Media moved to Wikipedia:Creation and usage of media files and became a dab, in March 2008. – Wbm1058 (talk) 18:57, 14 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
It seems we have two "help"/"how to" articles on Wikipedia files (media):
which some readers are complaining are too technical and difficult to understand, and no technical article on the details of file namespace and media namespace and how these namespaces are interlinked with Wikimedia Commons. Wbm1058 (talk) 19:54, 14 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
I think we do need better technical documentation in this area (maybe it's out there somewhere and I haven't found it yet). See File talk:Marywollstonecraft.jpg for questions I've had. Even some administrators and wp:filemovers don't understand this stuff completely, apparently. Wbm1058 (talk) 20:08, 14 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Note the redirect Wikipedia:Files (currently targetted at Help:Files) has been nominated at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2013 April 17#Wikiepdia:Files. Thryduulf (talk) 18:28, 17 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
