Discussion about list contents edit

Oppose concern over the notability of the people in the list. You've decided that 12/29 are not notable enough for an article, and two more are notable but have no article. Worse though, is this list not just the same as List of films of the Dutch East Indies but in reverse, i.e. directors and their movies, rather than movies and their directors? What more does this give Wikipedia? I suspect there's a featured article out there waiting to be written which encapsulates all of this, not just a bunch of lists which effectively repeat the same information in a different format.... More than happy to discuss this, of course. The Rambling Man (talk) 16:43, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • The red links are actually there based on your earlier comments at the film list (link those which are likely notable). I've already knocked the red links from 6 to 4 and, assuming my university schedule permits it, plan to eliminate them all. Those who are not redlinked are those who have few films under their belt and on whom I have not seen enough information to support an article (once again, assuming I go to Sinematek Indonesia there may be more and I may be proven wrong, but for now I've redlinked those I'm sure can support an article).
Regarding the "stand-alone-ness" of this list, we can compare the scope a little:
Scope Director Film
Focus Directors Films
Lede Demographic information, including racial and background trends Documentary information, including thematic trends
Pseudonyms Noted as footnotes, including which is more common Uses one name only
Wongs Explains the division of credit for works directed by the "Wong brothers" (i.e. who was involved in what film) Lists only "Wong brothers"
Time frame Mentions works released up until the 1970s Stops at 1949
It's quite possible that a summary of the lede could be worked into an article entitled Cinema of the Dutch East Indies, but to include the whole list would be undue weight in such an article.
In short, this list has a different focus and very different information than List of films of the Dutch East Indies; lists of film directors are not unheard of, as List of film directors from Italy exists. There's differences in major aspects, including how the directors are placed temporally. Part of the lede could be worked into another, yet-unwritten article, but the entirety of the list would be undue. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:53, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Also, we have to ask ourselves: is a person looking for all the film directors from this place and period going to count the individual boxes at the film article? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:59, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
If the two lists contained the same information; or even focussed on the same time spans; I'd probably agree with Rambling Man. But as it is, they do have different scopes by a significant margin, the current list here represents the filmographies of the directors active in this period rather than just the films they made during that period, and extends a good deal beyond the end of the Dutch East Indies as an entity, whereas the earlier list stops when that state ceased to be. Perhaps a difference in naming would help alleviate the concern; something that would indicate the current list extends out two decades further than it might seem? Perhaps List of film directors who worked in the Dutch East Indies? It seems a little clunky but does give a more accurate scope and lessens any perception of overlap. GRAPPLE X 23:36, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • I'll wait to see what TRM's comments are, but yeah that sounds a bit more accurate. Wonder what would happen if we started making lists of the cinema of other defunct political entities... — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:39, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ok, I'll strike my oppose. I can't offer much in the way of help with the title of the list, this is way outside my knowledge zone! The Rambling Man (talk) 07:37, 8 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Thanks. Should others recommend a move I'll be glad to open a discussion on the article's talk page. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:17, 8 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
