Wizards of Waverly Place is an American fantasy teen sitcom created by Todd J. Greenwald that aired on Disney Channel for four seasons between October 2007 and January 2012. It centers on Alex Russo (Selena Gomez), a teenage wizard living in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, who undertakes training alongside her siblings, Justin (David Henrie) and Max (Jake T. Austin), who also have magical abilities, knowing that one day they will compete to win sole custody of their family's powers. The Walt Disney Company developed Wizards to follow on from comedy series such as Lizzie McGuire and Hannah Montana; it premiered on October 12, 2007. Main themes include family, friendship and adolescence; it also contains fantasy elements. In addition to the episodes, a TV movie aired in 2009 and a special aired in 2013, a year after the series was ended to allow Gomez to take on more mature roles. The series had high ratings, was praised by critics, and won several awards. (Full article...)
