TFA blurb review

edit

The springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) is a medium-sized antelope found mainly in the dry areas of southern and southwestern Africa. A slender, long-legged bovid, it reaches 71 to 86 cm (28 to 34 in) at the shoulder and weighs between 27 and 42 kg (60 and 93 lb). Both sexes have a pair of long black horns that curve backwards, a white face, a dark stripe running from the eyes to the mouth, a light-brown coat with a reddish-brown stripe, and a white rump flap. Primarily browsing at dawn and dusk, it can live without drinking water for years, subsisting on succulent vegetation. Breeding peaks in the rainy season, when forage is most abundant. A single calf is weaned at nearly six months of age and leaves its mother a few months later. Springbok herds in the Kalahari desert and Karoo used to migrate in large numbers across the countryside. One of the few antelope species with an expanding population, the springbok is the national animal of South Africa. (Full article...)

Sainsf, and anyone else interested: thoughts and edits (up to 1025 characters total) are welcome. There's no rush; this hasn't been scheduled at TFA yet. This batch finishes up blurbs for FACs promoted in 2016. - Dank (push to talk) 15:08, 21 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Looks interesting and concise :) I really don't find any significant point missing as such for an introduction. Won't we have a picture going along with it? Sainsf (talk · contribs) 17:36, 21 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Yes, almost all the blurbs will have images on their Main Page day. I don't have a preference, but ... here you go. Btw, I'm currently working on Hartebeest. - Dank (push to talk) 18:24, 21 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Oh shoot! I just got rid of some repetition, which made it too short, so I added the German guy. - Dank (push to talk) 18:29, 21 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hmm.. I don't think the species description is such an interesting detail to add. I personally would love a mention of trekbokking instead. Maybe after the line Primarily browsing at ... on succulent vegetation we can add In earlier times, springbok of the Kalahari desert and Karoo would migrate in large numbers across the countryside, a practice known as trekbokking. I am not sure if it fits in the character limit so please check that. Happy to know Hartebeest is in line:) Cheers, Sainsf (talk · contribs) 06:17, 22 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
And yes the picture is perfect. Sainsf (talk · contribs) 06:17, 22 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Maybe "before X" instead of "In earlier times", where "X" could be a date or an event, such as their decline in numbers? - Dank (push to talk) 12:13, 22 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Good idea, but I don't think an event as such is included in the article. Presumably it has to be decline in numbers but we don't mention it explicitly in the text, haven't checked the sources though. Sainsf (talk · contribs) 18:28, 22 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Okay, does "used to" work? - Dank (push to talk) 18:55, 22 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, no problem. Sainsf (talk · contribs) 14:40, 25 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
