TFA blurb review

edit

Cretoxyrhina was a large mackerel shark that lived about 107 to 73 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous. Up to 8 meters (26 ft) in length and weighing up to 3,400 kilograms (3.7 short tons), the genus was one of the largest sharks of its time, and also among the fastest, with estimated burst speeds of up to 70 km/h (43 mph). Having a similar appearance and build to the modern great white shark, it was an apex predator in its ecosystem, preying on sharks and other large fish, mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, pterosaurs, and occasionally dinosaurs. Its teeth, up to 8 centimeters (3 in) long, were used for stabbing and slicing prey. Since the late 19th century, numerous exceptionally well-preserved fossils have been discovered in Kansas; they indicate a lifespan of nearly forty years. One factor in Cretoxyrhina's extinction may have been increasing competition with predators that arose during the Campanian, especially the giant mosasaur Tylosaurus. (Full article...)
