Done. You are the alt text image guru, so please critique the alt text I wrote. I'd like it to be as good as possible. ceranthor 16:02, 18 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for doing that. It's much better now, but could stand some further improvements:
  • The proper names should be removed unless (like "Iran") they are verifiable directly from the image by a non-expert. These names include Crocus sativus and Qayen. Please see WP:ALT #Proper names.
  • Other details that are not verifiable from the images by a non-expert, and should be reworded or removed, include "Just next to the earthquake is a tectonic ridge", "representing its depth" (most people don't know that a gold star represents depth), and "(from which the spice Saffron is taken from)". Please see WP:ALT#Verifiability.
  • The alt text for the map should be written to convey the useful info that the map conveys, and should not focus on irrelevant visual detail. Thus, it shouldn't mention the "gold star" (just say where the earthquake is), and it shouldn't say "to the right" (it should say "to the west"). For more on this please see WP:ALT#Maps.
  • Some phrases can be removed in the interest of brevity: "is marked with", "In the photograph,", "A panoramic photograph of" (just say "a panorama of"). Please see WP:ALT #Phrases to avoid.

I've tried my best to resolve your concerns. Please tell me if I have failed to fix any of them properly. ceranthor 21:08, 18 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
Everything looks good now except for the map. Its alt text contains some information that is not obvious from the image itself. It's not obvious to a non-expert reader that the mountain range next to the earthquake is a "tectonic ridge"; just call it a "mountain rainge". The phrase "represented in red" is focusing too much on an irrelevant detail. And the alt text is omitting the most important info that the map conveys, namely that the earthquake is in northeast Iran, near the Afghan border. The map is pretty bad: it didn't identify the countries on the map. I fixed that, so it's now OK for the alt text to say "Afghan border". Eubulides (talk) 22:04, 18 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
The map's alt text has been fixed now; thanks. Eubulides (talk) 04:23, 23 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Comment The toolbox reveals a dead link. Dabomb87 (talk) 22:50, 23 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Upon careful examination, you'll see that the link at first appears to be dead, then loads. ceranthor 15:21, 24 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
