    • Campus Ambassador introduces Wikipedia and Wikipedia culture/etiquette
      • Create user accounts, make first edit to an article

Wikipedia Assignment #1

  • Due Session 1, March 31th
  • Choose a partner and topic. Submit these by editing the table on the coursepage.
      • You will create new article or expand an existing short article. Some ways to find existing short articles:
      • Go through related articles and make a list of topic ideas make a list of related articles that already exist.
    • Start the online student orientation. During this training, you will create an account, make edits in a sandbox, and learn the basic rules of Wikipedia.
    • Look through these categories and their subcategories: Category:Environment stubs, Category:Start-Class Environment articles.

Submit outline/starter article Submit by email the names of at least two experts/professionals on the topic of your article.

  • Continue research in preparation for expanding your article.

Work with Online Ambassador mentor (TBD) to polish your short starter article.

  • In class
    • Be prepared to discuss your topic ideas in class. You will have an opportunity to discuss your topics with other classmates and pair up with a project partner. Bring some potential sources to class.
    • Begin working on your article in your user sandbox or user sub page.

    • Expand your article into an a comprehensive treatment of the topic.
    • Move your sandbox article into Wikipedia's main space (live articles).
  • In class (date to be determined)
    • Campus Ambassador leads open lab/workshop. Be prepared to take advantage of your last in person opportunity to ask questions from and work with our ambassador.
      • Demo: Moving article from sandbox into main space.
      • Uploading images onto Wikipedia articles and introduction to free licenses (see handouts below).
      • Q&A session.
  • Due by May 9
  • Peer-review and copy-edit another team's articles.
  • Respond to any feedback on talk page. Indicate whether it was helpful, discuss any unclear points, and collaborate with your reviewer(s) to revise the article.
  • Prepare for in-class presentation about your Wikipedia-editing experiences and the content of your article.
  • In class
  • On your article's talk page, suggest two experts in the field (not necessarily Wikipedia users) who you believe would be well equipped to review your article, with a link to their homepage and/or their e-mail address.
