First, for the benefit of those of our readers who are not familiar with the concept, could briefly summarize what GLAMs are and what their relationship with Wikimedia projects is?

  • ANSWER

How and when did you become involved in Wikipedia?

  • My first edit was on 12th October 2005, fixing a spelling mistake. I incidentally had a spelling mistake in the edit summary. After that, I just sort of fell into it. I became active in the outreach side of things; Chapters and WikipediaWeekly.

Do you work in the GLAM sector or is it merely a an interest for you?

  • I would like to work in the GLAM sector, not least because I invented the term.

How and when did you become interested in its relationship with GLAMs?

As a rough guess, how many different GLAM institutions and organizations have you been talking to, or visited, so far?

How did you become involved with Wikimedia UK and become the convener of the GLAM-WIKI conference in London?

  • I joined the Wikimedia Australia after University where I did my thesis on WP. I became the Vice President, and ran GLAM-Wiki Australia in Canberra. As a result of that, there were talks on Meta about a Wikipedian in Residence program. The British Museum agreed to the proposition, I flew over to England and became the inaugural Wikipedian in Residence. Whilst there, Wikimedia UK said that they liked the idea of a GLAM-WIKI event. They advertised for a convener role, I applied and got the gig.

Tell us a bit about your part in the Wikipedia in Residence program.

  • The British Museum really just wanted me to just write articles on topics related to the museum. I though, wanted to "form relationships between Wikipedians and the British Museum curators", trying to match the staff and Wikipedia editors for writing articles.

Are there any other conferences you'll be convening in the near future?

  • I have none planned at the moment, but will be attending GLAM-WIKI France (3-4 December 2010). I'm not convening but I will be doing a presention at it. I'll be returning home after that.

Was the British Museum the first choice for the GLAM-WIKI and Backstage Pass events?

  • The backstage pass was held at the British Museum because I was there as the Wikipedian in Residence. We wanted to have GLAM-WIKI here, as they let us use the conference centre, so it felt right.
