Introduction to the Wikipedia project

Welcome to your Wikipedia project's course timeline. This page will guide you through the Wikipedia project for your course. Be sure to check with your instructor to see if there are other pages you should be following as well. 

Your course has also been assigned a Wikipedia Content Expert. Check your Talk page for notes from them. You can also reach them through the "Get Help" button on this page.

Assignment - Practicing the basics
  • Create an account and join this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you.
  • It's time to dive into Wikipedia. Below, you'll find the first set of online trainings you'll need to take. New modules will appear on this timeline as you get to new milestones. Be sure to check back and complete them! Incomplete trainings will be reflected in your grade. 
  • When you finish the trainings, practice by introducing yourself to a classmate or your instructor on their Talk page.

Assignment - Critique an article

It's time to think critically about Wikipedia articles. You'll evaluate a Wikipedia article, and leave suggestions for improving it on the article's Talk page.

First, complete the "Evaluating Articles and Sources" training (linked below).

Second, critique the article on Ethnobotany. Leave notes in your sandbox space about what you would add to the article if you could. During your review, consider the following questions (but don't feel limited to these): 

  • Is each fact referenced with an appropriate, reliable reference?
  • Is everything in the article relevant to the article topic? Is there anything that distracted you?
  • Is the article neutral? Are there any claims, or frames, that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?
  • Where does the information come from? Are these neutral sources? If biased, is that bias noted?
  • Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?
  • Check a few citations. Do the links work? Is there any close paraphrasing or plagiarism in the article?
  • Is any information out of date? Is anything missing that could be added?
  • Choose at least 2 questions most relevant the the article and leave your evaluation on the article's Talk page. Be sure to sign your feedback with four tildes — Jmenczer (talk) 17:14, 20 December 2016 (UTC). [reply]

Assignment - Add to an article

To finish up the assignment, you'll be asked to make a small contribution to a Wikipedia article. You can do this in one of two ways.

Option 1: make a small contribution to improve the Ethnobotany article. For example, you could update the references, add new citations, and/or delete old citations whose links may be broken. You could also add 2-5 new sentences to the article, with 1-2 citations included to back up your claim, in an area that you felt was weak or needing improvement during your critique.

Option 2: select a new article that you'd like to make a small contribution to. You will need to do a full article critique to find out how the article can best be improved, and then make the change. You can select an article from one of the following categories, or select one of your own. 

Once you have your article selected, please go to the Students tab above and assign yourself your article topic. 


Before you make your contribution, please review the two training modules below. 

Your contributions could include adding 1-2 new citations, updating references, removing invalid links, and/or adding 2-5 sentences of new content backed up with citations. 

What's due?

A 2-page review of the project, including the following:

  • your article critique on Ethnobotany*;
  • your article critique for your second article if you chose to add content to a new article;
  • a summary of your edits and why you felt they were a valuable addition to the article**.
  • Bonus points: include a few of your thoughts on how Wikipedia can be used to promote better understanding of plant and human health.  
  • Feel free to just copy and paste your article critique from your sandbox. 
    ** You can print out the "before" and "after" of your article to help illustrate your contributions.
