This course covers methods used by ecological and environmental anthropologists in the field. Our focus for the term is wildlife trafficking and trade in Africa for belief use and bushmeat. Students will research the role of culture in the harvest, trade, and consumption of wildlife and wildlife parts in Africa (as opposed to markets outside the African continent). This work will contribute to a larger international and interdisciplinary scientific synthesis project regarding connections between wildlife trafficking and trade and vulture species population declines in Africa. However, it is important to share scientific findings with a wider general audience to raise awareness about wildlife population declines and human contributions to such to seek appropriate and just solutions. As a result, students will be required to transform what they have learned into Wikipedia content.
