This graduate seminar considers the growing worldwide significance of Indigenous cultural politics and how Indigenous communities mobilize rhetorical and discursive tools to actively oppose oppression and create sustainable futures. It works to understand the development of the rhetoric of indigeneity as an aspect of our times that must be examined through a number of different rhetorical formations. This course explores scholarship in a range of disciplines from rhetorical studies, rhetoric & composition, Native American & Indigenous Studies, critical ethnic studies, decolonial studies, etc. Drawing from various thematic contexts this exploration charts a wide array of Indigenous rhetorics in order to analyze the scope and significance of such theories, methodologies, communities particularly as they relate to the politics of decolonization.
Wikipedia: Editing or New entry in Indigenous Rhetorics: This assignment asks you to either edit an existing Wikipedia entry or draft a new one about an issue or topic of your choosing that relates to our seminar. You are encouraged to draw on the sources we use in class, as well as any additional, reliable academic sources you find, in order to work on your entry. You are also encouraged to focus on a topic that relies on community-based research. The goal of this assignment is to help address issues associated with Wikipedia. While millions of people turn to it for information, studies have shown that Wikipedia content is biased based on the large proportion of its authors and editors who tend to be English-speaking, middle and upper class men, living in majority-Christian countries in the Global North. There are, for instance, far more biographical entries of men than women on Wikipedia.
