Microorganisms are incredibly diverse in both phylogenetic and metabolic capabilities. This course will discuss the molecular, biochemical, and evolutionary diversity of the microbial world including Bacteria, Archaea, Eukaryotes and viruses. Includes the concepts of microbial speciation and approaches for recognizing the metabolic, phylogenetic, and genomic diversity of cultivated and as yet uncultivated bacteria. Students will research a microbe from the current course content and update or add a wikipedia page on that particular microbe.
