This course critically examines the relationship between colonialism and science from the 19th century through today. Together we will learn to reexamine stories on the history of science through a critical feminist and postcolonial framework. We will focus on the role of science in legitimizing ideas of racial hierarchies that were used to justify colonialist and imperialist projects. Finally, we will turn to decolonizing methods in science, exploring modes of resistance to dominant scientific narratives.

Class will include Wikipedia assignment to fill in histories of science that have been overlooked related to colonialism, imperialism, and scientific racism.
