First-Year Seminar is a two-semester course sequence required of all full-time first-year students. As the central component of a learning community, Seminar helps students achieve success, academically and socially, as they make the transition to the university. Seminar provides students with opportunities for meaningful interactions with faculty and peers about substantive matters as well as timely, constructive feedback about their learning. Students are immersed in an active learning environment with a purposefully integrated and contextualized curriculum, fostering the development of transferable skills and engaging them in the academic community.
As part of a linked learning community, the First-Year Seminar course is connected to two other core curriculum courses, American History to 1865 and a first-year writing course. Among the learning community courses, we’ll integrate digital tools/platforms such as Wikipedia that will best help students to learn to communicate their knowledge to a public audience and readership. Through the support of Wiki Education and the learning community faculty, students will hone their research, writing and critical thinking skills.
Students will leave this learning experience a more educated citizen with a range of new skills that will help them in future courses and beyond Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
