This is an introductory course in Latina/o literature, which starts with the origins of Latina/o writing in the U.S.-based Spanish-language press of the nineteenth century and ends with recent innovations in print and on the web. The first major course assignment, which we just completed, is a project centered on archival research and digital mapping to recover the history of the nineteenth-century Spanish-language press in New York City. During that assignment, several of the students pointed to a lack of Wikipedia entries for many of the key writers from that period. Given student interest, I am planning to replace a more traditional paper assignment that I had planned for later in the semester with a Wikipedia assignment.
