Using television, film, advertising, magazines, blogs, and music, we’ll analyze sex, gender and popular culture. Since media reflects contemporary ideas of sex and gender while playing a role in their construction, we’ll address social inequality based on sexuality, race, social class, disability, and other related identity categories. We’ll assess embedded messages about electoral politics, racism, homophobia, transphobia, and capitalism in pop culture texts even as they have potential for subversion and transformation.
