Alternatively you can select an article by viewing the list at the "Available Articles" portion of the Articles tab and clicking Select. If you are working in a group, be aware that only one group member can select the topic via this method; the remaining group members will need to assign the article via the Home tab.

Check In

Hello all! Just wanted to summarize where we should be this week to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Last week, we picked our Delftia topics to research and write about. Fill out the spreadsheet to let us know what topic you are working on. If you don't see the Wiki page you want to work on in assigned articles, email me (lfedere ncsu.edu). Note: Most of the class will be working on Delftia and Delftia acidovorans. If you choose another Delftia species,  you'll likely be working alone or with just a few people. We also had a meeting about plagiarism, the slides are posted below.

This week, you should be exploring literature in your topic area and beginning to draft your contributions to the Wikipedia page. You should start organizing your findings with an annotated bibliography. Everybody's goal should be to have 5 primary sources about Delftia in the annotated bibliography by the end of this week. This will help you organize your findings and citations.

While exploring literature, annotate with Hypothes.is! This will help us organize our thoughts, compile literature, and work together to find and verify information in our sources. Join the Delftia group with this link: https://hypothes.is/groups/jb8AZ8xy/delftia

In class - Choosing your Topic

Add your name to your chosen topic on this Google Sheet. If you are interested in a topic not listed, feel free to add it!

Feel free to work together with a classmate on a topic, but no more than 2 students per topic please! The exception is gold biomineralization--this is a big topic and might need 3 or 4 students.

Sign up for your topic here.

Assignment - Annotated Bibliography

Summarize your five chosen sources.

  • Use this exercise to practice your citations!
  • Because we're working in groups, the bibliography and article sandbox will appear "owned" by the first person assigned to that article. Create a header with your name to separate your work from others!

In class - Where To Draft

This week is drafting! We are all excited to start editing Live Wiki, but I'm going to remind us one more time: Draft in your sandbox! We're going to peer-review and evaluate our drafts before going live, and this important step can prevent accidental plagiarism or mistakes!

Where to edit? On your home page, scroll down to the "my articles" section. Click Bibliography to edit your annotated bibliography. Once you've finished this, you can click Sandbox and start editing with your group!

The page you put your bibliography should have the URL

User:Username /Article name / Bibliography

The page you edit your article with your group should have the URL

User:Username Article name

Let me know if you have any trouble finding the proper locations!

Milestones

Everyone has begun writing their article drafts.

In class - FYI
  • Forgot to include this in the email, but CHECK THE LINKS to make sure they work, don't use the NCSU proxy, and have the relevant information.
  • Evaluate the sandbox draft of your assigned review article.
  • Put your comments in the space for your individual review. No edits to the article sandbox this week. The URL should resemble wiki.org/User:dimisitque/Delftia lacustris/dvnorman Peer Review.
  • You can just type up your comments, or copy and paste the draft into your review space and comment this way. Dealer's choice!
  • FYI: Last week, there was a module for peer review. Filled with good info and lots of prompts for evaluating drafts.
Milestones

Every student has finished reviewing their assigned articles, making sure that every article has been reviewed.

Assignment - Respond to your peer review

You probably have some feedback from other students and possibly other Wikipedians. Consider their suggestions, decide whether it makes your work more accurate and complete, and edit your draft to make those changes.

Resources:

  • Editing Wikipedia, pages 12 and 14
  • Reach out to your Wikipedia Expert if you have any questions.

Assignment - Begin moving your work to Wikipedia

Now that you've improved your draft based on others' feedback, it's time to move your work live - to the "mainspace."
