How can activist media-makers create social change today? This course will explore how both this history of national and local activist movements as well as contemporary digital movements such as #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo. As part of this exploration, we’ll consider the historical connections between today’s social movements and movements of the past. At the same time, we’ll delve into how these emerging tools have created both new opportunities for activists, but also new risks and challenges as these same tools have been adopted by authoritarian regimes around the globe. Students will contribute historical information about media-based social movements to Wikipedia.
