Planned Intervention

edit

Here you will write one to two paragraphs, as a group, in which you describe (1) What the overall focus of your intervention will be (2) what sources you will use for this intervention, being as specific as possible (3) Where possible, a broad outline of the potential section should be included.

One point we will try to fix in this article is one of the sources under the references part of the article. There is an error that needs fixing with it. Also we will take out the picture of Cesare Beccaria, putting something else there assuming the historical portion is not taken down. If it is we could maybe put an actual picture of something that resembles public criminology to make the page look better. I (Taylor) am not too sure what I want to do with the big table on the right of the article, maybe take it out since is it really needed? I would like to discuss it more with my group later. I'm not too sure what sources we would be using for this. One source would be using wiki help to understand how to fix the reference error this article has. We also will try to fix grammatical errors in this article.

Personally I’d remove the part on the Public criminology Wikipedia page about the history with Beccaria. In the talk section there was some criticism about this being formatted to much like an essay instead of encyclopedia page. This topic is a little bit vague to work with since there really isn’t much information on it from google scholar or the EMU library database. The best thing the general group can do it get rid of that Beccaria criminology photo and keep checking the data base for more accredited sources to back up this page and make it more professional. Also get some more images that pertain to Public Criminology.

Vincenzo Ruggiero wrote an article called,"How Public is Public Criminology" back in 08/2012. Vincenzo speaks about how society has had dilemmas with social movements and educated criminologists speaking out towards law enforcement and judicial representatives on there feelings of law, incarceration, courts, hate crimes, genocide, etc. A Lot of this paper speaks about more sociology based stuff rather than public criminology. But id recommend speaking more about public sociology on the public criminology page to replace the history section. There are far more sources on Public Sociology. In the Wikipedia learning assignments it speaks about having at least several edu/credible sources per paragraph. I think having more information on Public sociology would be a large advancement in this wiki page.Koshea2 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. • Add more diagrams to make sure its easy for the readers to understand.

Needs Group

Just a thought: Cesare Beccaria needs to go. I agree that it is dated and unreliable. In the needs section it should be more information on facts and less of an opinion piece.BreezyLBM (talk) 12:33, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that Beccaria needs to go as well. For the history section maybe expand on the examples that they give or find different ones. Several are mentioned but it isn't explained how they contributed to the history of public criminology. They just seem like random examples to me. Smithpf (talk) 13:49, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
For the needs section maybe cite some examples of benefits from other sources like Mears, Land, Rock, or Tonry. Uggen and Inderbitzin are heavily used. Smithpf (talk) 13:53, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

We need to look at the section as a whole and re-write it. It has too many parts and "Needs to be streamlined."(See Talk page) We also need to re-write the title. As per the talk page, the "Need for Criminology" is too opinionated. Add in more people other than Beccaria. Shuelke (talk) 17:11, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

We can use various examples from other journals to provide a less one side Wiki page, the needs section is heavy on Uggen and Inderbitzen. Maybe use work from Rock, Tonry, Mears or Land to provide neutral information for the pros and cons.

  • At the moment, the only articles that we have found on Public Criminology is the Uggen and Inderbitzen piece, plus the other assigned authors. Hopefully, we will find more authors who take this stance and are able to draw from their research. We will also try to find some different authors with different criticisms on public criminology. Also, with most of the information already on the wiki page, we will try to fine tune some of the minor and major issues. We will also search for more examples of public criminology. It is also important that we cover the challenges criminologist faces. By the end of our section we will have hopefully fixed any current grammatical errors and will have added new material that has proper grammar and an understandable flow for readers.
