Winston Churchill described democracy as “the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.” We discuss definitions of and alternatives to democracy, debate the pros and cons, and examine why democratic political regimes have emerged and spread.

  • To practice editing and communicating on Wikipedia, introduce yourself to another student on their user talk page.

Evaluate Wikipedia’s coverage of one of our topics in class so far (e.g. “democracy”), or one of the authors or theories (e.g. “social capital”).  Come to class ready to talk about how it could be improved.

Working in pairs, review each others' Wikipedia edits and offer comments for further improvement.  You should refer to the handout evaluating Wikipedia when making your suggestions.

Thursday, 4/14
Finalize your edits and submit a 1-2 page summary of your edits, your comments on your partner's work, and the changes you made in response to the comments you received, via the class Moodle page.  (1-inch margins, double-spaced, 12-point font).  You can include screenshots in a longer appendix if you wish.
