Informed by a feminist approach to online activism, you will identify gaps in a Wikipedia entry on arts education, arts integration, arts assessment, discipline based arts education, community arts education, critical arts pedagogy. You will identify how the entry treats social theory and social identity concepts like: power, discrimination, critical pedagogy, critical literacy, bi/multilingualism, gender, LGBTQ, class, opportunity gaps, marginalization, privilege and/or inclusion—and take notes on your analysis. You will edit the Wiki page to address omissions or narrow perspectives, in relation to one or more of these concepts utilizing course and at least one outside journal article. Introduction to the Wikipedia project

 Welcome to our Wikipedia project course timeline! This page will guide you through our readings, trainings, and assignment details. You can also read more about it on your "Wikistorming" handout. 

Our course has been assigned a Wikipedia Content Expert. Check your Talk page for notes from them during the assignment. You can also reach them through the "Get Help" button on this page.

Assignment - Grading criteria

EDEL 543, WIKISTORMING (150 points)

Wikistorming Grading Criteria:

  •  Analysis of original Wikipedia entry indicates understanding of contexts that impact arts education such as contexts of inclusion, language, ethnicity, gender and sexuality and class.
  • Additions to Wikipedia entry address social theory and/or social identity concepts, as identified in the assignment description.
  • Documentation evaluates pedagogical implications of Wikistorming for critical arts education.
  • Documentation is posted on time, is professional and edited.


Wikistorming Assignment Point Distribution:

50 points: Completion of Week 10 steps 1-7, including Forum post documenting your process for selecting a page to edit and why it needed editing, relating to the readings in our course. (1-2 paragraphs)

 

100 points: Completion of Week 11 steps 8-11, including Forum post documenting how you made the editing changes (what content did you add, revise, omit), what sources you used to make those changes, and an evaluation of Wikistorming as a critical pedagogical tool, for students and/or teachers to engage in. (2 paragraphs plus screen shots and annotation)

STEP 6: Peruse these pages and choose a Wikipedia editing project:


  • You can also peruse Wikipedia on your own and identify an article that demonstrates either gender, heterosexual, racial or other Western biases related to education and the arts. Check out Category:Education stubs for a list of articles related to education that need improving. 
  • Which ever article you select, check the page's "Edit" page to make sure its not under any protected status, which would limit your ability to edit it! See the Victoria Beckham Edit Page HERE for an example of a protected page.
  • To assign yourself an article, visit the Students tab above and next to your username, assign yourself the topic you chose. Make sure you have not selected a topic already chosen.

critique your article & gather citations

STEP 8: Carefully read through the page's History Page and Talk Page so you understand how the Wikipedia community has been working with this topic. Then, do your research! Gather all citations that you will be using to document your corrections and additions and, compile all edits and citations in a Word document (which you will turn in on your Week 11 Wikistorming Forum post).

  • Here are some questions to consider during your evaluation (but don't feel limited to these): 
    • Is each fact referenced with an appropriate, reliable reference?
    • Is everything in the article relevant to the article topic? Is there anything that distracted you?
    • Is the article neutral? Are there any claims, or frames, that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?
    • Where does the information come from? Are these neutral sources? If biased, is that bias noted?
    • Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?
    • Check a few citations. Do the links work? Is there any close paraphrasing or plagiarism in the article?
    • Is any information out of date? Is anything missing that could be added?
  •  Choose 2 questions most relevant to your article & leave your evaluation on the article's Talk page. Be sure to sign your feedback with four tildes — EvaJo243 (talk) 04:18, 30 October 2016 (UTC). [reply]

STEP 9: Make your edits!!! Be sure you are keeping with Wikipedia's guidelines, particularly Neutral Point of View and No Original Research, both of which can be tricky to catch. Also, be sure to cite all your changes/additions!

STEP 10: Respond to any concerns, questions or revisions from the Wikipedia community. I can help you with this--this is the FUN part!!!
