Draft logo for WIR peace and diplomacy - year long initiative
  • Draft logo for WIR peace and diplomacy - year long initiative. Comments please. Ideas and suggestions welcome. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:36, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Great idea, WomenArtistUpdates. Can you try it without the hairlines on the WiR logo? It may lighten the overall look, which I would prefer. Oronsay (talk) 20:10, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Removed the hairline outline on the WiR logo. What do you think? WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:22, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I really like it. @Ipigott, @Rosiestep, @Victuallers, @Lajmmoore, @CT55555, @Cielquiparle: It would be good if you and other followers of this page gave their thoughts. Oronsay (talk) 05:28, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It looks good. The thickness of the lines on the peace symbol are thinner than normal. The image covers peace well, but does it cover diplomacy? Is there a diplomacy symbol? Google images suggests hand shake or doves, doves also being a peace symbol...? CT55555(talk) 05:34, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks CT55555. I have replaced the peace sign with a dove. I think it is a softer image and I prefer it to my original peace sign. Anyone caring to compare the images, just tap the image, that should take you to the commons where all previous images should be available for viewing. I appreciate the feedback. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 17:34, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I like the dove with an olive branch! But I'm not sure the Women in Red overlay is optimal. Any other way that both images can be used but placed differently? --Rosiestep (talk) 18:43, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I find this better. I do also agree the red head and the white dove don't overlay very well. I wonder if a collage with less overlap would work better? CT55555(talk) 20:03, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Rosiestep and CT55555, More like this? Keep the feedback coming :) WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:16, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect. I am out of critical feedback. :-) CT55555(talk) 20:38, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
WomenArtistUpdates, I like it! --Rosiestep (talk) 20:41, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Piping in to say I love it @WomenArtistUpdates! Innisfree987 (talk) 21:02, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, @WomenArtistUpdates for your creativity. The result is terrific, cheery and bright. Oronsay (talk) 01:22, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Creative Collaboration rules! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 17:40, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I love this logo! Lajmmoore (talk) 17:45, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
WomenArtistUpdates Any idea why the logo is not updating in the invitation? I replaced it with our standard logo, saved, and then pasted in the Peace and Diplomacy one, but your original design remains. Oronsay (talk) 19:09, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Oronsay, it’s a caching problem; I hadn’t looked at the previous version and when I got to the invite, I see the correct logo. If you try purging the page I bet it will show for you too. Innisfree987 (talk) 19:23, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, @Innisfree987, for solving the mystery for me. Oronsay (talk) 20:31, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oronsay, Ipigott, Rosiestep, Lajmmoore, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle and anyone else who wants to help out - very rough draft of to-do list created. I am going to work up a draft logo for Peace and Diplomacy. If it should have and ampersand rather than an "and" please update. If you know you are going to be unable to help out, please ping, totally understandable but nice to know. 5 pages need to be created. I will take #1day1woman 2023. I hope to get that posted this evening. Oh, if someone could double check the numbering before too much gets underway it would be appreciated. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 15:39, 20 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for getting started on this, WomenArtistUpdates. I can work on several pages over the next day or two and will confirm which before I start. The numbers look fine. Oronsay (talk) 15:50, 20 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick reply Oronsay. I have started #1day1woman and Alphabet run M & N. I'll stop there for now. Please ping me with any errors I should be aware of. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 15:51, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm starting the Geofocus and then will move on to our Peace and Diplomacy page. Oronsay (talk) 19:02, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not really sure what's expected / needed... I gather from me maybe it's for Tip of the Month... I thought something like "Use the Find Link tool to de-orphan your article" is short and pithy...and/or reminding people to use "What links here" (?) (Newer users might not know – I didn't for longer than you would have thought, because the skin I was using was hiding it.) Cielquiparle (talk) 22:53, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for the response Cielquiparle. Yes, I was hoping you would select a tip of the month. I like "Use the Find Link tool to de-orphan your article". Is the link I included the "Find Link tool" you use? WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:26, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've now left a message asking if it's ok to use the link User:Edward/Find link (or to feature it in the first place), will keep you posted (or maybe having now embedded this sends a ping as well)? Cielquiparle (talk) 07:28, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In case there is any confusion...per my message below...I am ok with the wording and embedded link changed to WP:FINDLINK now. Let me know if you need anything else. Cielquiparle (talk) 22:43, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm happy to add to the peace and diplomacy list, if you set it up and ping me, I'll see what I can do. But don't rely on me only please. CT55555(talk) 15:54, 20 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oronsay, Ipigott, Rosiestep, Lajmmoore, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle, Innisfree987 and anyone else who wants to help out, All the pages have been created, they just need to be reviewed. If you have time please take a page and proof read for errors and click on some links to make sure they work. If all looks right, add your name to the participant list. A General question fro the group: Any thought on adding to our announcements "January 1 is Public Domain Day? CT55555 Hoping you re able to proof "Peace and Diplomacy". Lajmmoore, will you be able to send the mass mailing for the invite once it is ready? Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 17:39, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Everyone: Please consider what could to be added to Peace and Diplomacy as its intro is sparse. The wording for the Tip of the Week also needs to be worked on and added to the Invitation. Having read our earlier discussion, I don't think linking to the PD2023 page is worthwhile without some explanation of what WIR members might do, given that it only has blue links for both creators and their works. I think it would be better if we could organise redlists for Art+Feminism (March) and Women Writers (September). Thanks, @WomenArtistUpdates, for keeping us on track. Oronsay (talk) 19:09, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Haven't heard back from the maintainer of Find Link, but for "Tip of the Month" I've swapped the link to WP:FINDLINK which seems "clean". (I will try email now, as I don't think he logs in that often.) Cielquiparle (talk) 19:22, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Update: We should be good to go for linking to Find Link in "Tip of the Month" (heard back from Edward). Cielquiparle (talk) 14:04, 24 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Peace and Diplomacy seems good. There are some similarities to the Women Refugees event from this year. Would it be appropriate to link to that in the list? i.e. refugees are people who are refugees due to lack of peace, failed diplomacy etc? CT55555(talk) 19:27, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
good idea @CT55555 - I've added it on now :) Lajmmoore (talk) 17:50, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oronsay, and Lajmmoore, I think the invite and pages a have all been reviewed. Do you think it is ready to go? I do. (pinging Innisfree987 another WIR mass mailer.) WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:18, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Looks great - thank you so much for the majority of the organising @WomenArtistUpdates & @Oronsay - I'll do the mass message now! Lajmmoore (talk) 17:51, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Done! Lajmmoore (talk) 18:00, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Public Domain edit

This appears in our table of annual events and I recall a discussion about including it in 2023.--Oronsay (talk) 19:26, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Oronsay, Here's the discussion from last year about Women's work in the Public Domain. In a nutshell, it looks like we have lost the technical ability to create a list of women falling into public domain. Not quite a redlist because many of the artists already have articles. That coupled with the fact that PD law differs from country to country brought our plans for a PD 2022 event to a halt. It is still a great idea though. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:45, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I did find this page 2023 in public domain as a possible starting point. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:59, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Firming up for February edit

I have tried to sort out the remaining items on our February initiatives. In particular I've included WIR-259 Feminism and Folklore. Perhaps Rosiestep and Gamaliel can check this through and see whether anything needs to be added in connection with the Fountain tool. I've also completed a draft invitation but there are no longer any announcements. It would be good if we could finalize all this today so that Lajmmoore can mass mail the invitation. (Sorry for posting here but the other sections are becoming increasingly confusing.)--Ipigott (talk) 09:36, 29 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Really like this but it's rather long. If it fits in as it is, that's fine. Otherwise, how about "Mobile readers may only see the article "lead" – take some time to make it shine! Include something to keep people reading."--Ipigott (talk) 14:58, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good! Let's use it in March. (Think it's an essential tip, also for heading off unnecessary trips to AfD, although we don't need to say it like that...) Cielquiparle (talk) 15:20, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for drafting this, @WomenArtistUpdates. The number looks fine. I will get started on Justice #257. Oronsay (talk) 22:38, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think skipping a geofocus event in Februray would be okay as historically, our Black Women event includes redlists from many countries. --Rosiestep (talk) 01:24, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would just like to remind everyone that following on a suggestion from Jess Wade we recently had a discussion on casting directors where it was suggested we could include "Film", perhaps in February. It would be open to all women in film but would emphasize the fact that the majority of casting directors are women and would call for attention to other non-acting occupations in film. If not February, then perhaps we should schedule this for one of the coming months. Like others, I would be happy to skip geofocus for February but as mentioned below, I think there is potential for developing interest in women from individual cities.--Ipigott (talk) 07:04, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Am starting to draft Black Women. Oronsay (talk) 01:43, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done @Oronsay @Rosiestep@WomenArtistUpdates & huge thanks to @Ipigott for wrangling all the various debates into coherence this month - it is so appreciated. Lajmmoore (talk) 07:28, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you, Lajmmoore. You were also quick on the draw. As we are promoting Peace and Democracy, it was simply a matter of practising what we preach. It seems to have worked as I haven't received any complaints.--Ipigott (talk) 10:37, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Feminism and Folklore 2023 edit

Oronsay, Ipigott, WomenArtistUpdates, Lajmmoore, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle , Innisfree987, plus Antiqueight, Chocmilk03, Fuzheado, Gamaliel, Megalibrarygirl, Penny Richards, SusunW, and anyone else... The organizers of m:Feminism and Folklore 2023 have reached out to me off-wiki asking if we had a link ready to a meetup page. Their event runs for 2 months: February and March. Do we want to include it in our February line-up? Currently, we only have it scheduled for 1 month in our Annual March Initiatives section. Maybe Folklore of the Northern Hemisphere in Feb; Folklore of the Southern Hemisphere in March? --Rosiestep (talk) 16:20, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest we include a link in our invitation for February and maintain our focus on Feminism and Folklore for March. Many of our members have already seen the invitation on our talk page and can start contributing on 1 February if they wish.--Ipigott (talk) 16:45, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds about right to me. Penny Richards (talk) 17:15, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The way I read the invitation/request from m:Feminism and Folklore 2023 They want groups to create a page for the contest on the local wiki and set up a fountain tool on that page. I could start with a WiR landing page with the number 258, if Gamaliel is willing to set up the Fountain tool on it. Rosiestep, could you confirm that is the request. Gamaliel could you let me know if you have time and inclination? The event would run from Feb 1 through March 31, correct? I won't do anything til I hear back from you two. Thanks! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 18:28, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like they already have a fountain page set up. Or is this a global one and they want us to run an en.wp only offshoot? If there are local and international contests, perhaps they should use the same fountain so participants don't have to register each article twice. I'll ask them on meta. Gamaliel (talk) 18:33, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Truly, I'm fine with whatever is decided here. But to clarify why I'm bringing it up now is because I was pinged today on Telegram asking if WiR would link our Folklore meetup page to the main Folklore page on Meta.. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:38, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Looking back over the last three years, WIR has offered Folklore, with links to m:Feminism and Folklore in Feb or March. In 2020 it was in March and combined with Art+Activism | Wiki Loves FolkloreMarch 2020 (Women's History Month); in 2021 in Feb as Folklore (15 articles); in 2022 in Mar as Feminism and Folklore (14 articles). It would make sense to me if WIR's Folklore coincided with meta's, i.e. ran for two months starting in February. As well as the 2023 page on Meta, there is also one on en.Wiki, Wikipedia:Feminism and Folklore 2023 - should we use the Sign up etc code from that page on our WIR page, @Gamaliel? (Also, happy to go with whatever is decided...) Oronsay (talk) 19:33, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oronsay, Thanks for the historical information and links! And thanks Gamaliel for reiterating that we don't need a landing page. I couldn't see where we could sign up if interested. Now that I see that, I put some text in the announcements section for February. We can pivot if something else is decided. WomenArtistsUpdates (talk) 21:43, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fountain update: The global team has let me know that we will need a local fountain page and that they will draw from those pages for the global contest. I've set it up here. I would like a couple of volunteers to help act as fellow 'jurors' on Fountain. All you'd have to do is verify that each article submitted is newly created or expanded and fits the theme of the contest. Thanks! Gamaliel (talk) 16:03, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Also if someone creates a WIR template for this contest let me know and I can have Fountain add it automatically to each submission. Gamaliel 16:03, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, Gamaliel! --Rosiestep (talk) 16:34, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
All - But WiR will also have an event page, right? E.g., for our historical purposes as per previous years? --Rosiestep (talk) 16:31, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see why WIR wouldn't. We need somewhere to put the Fountain link and explain the contest. Gamaliel (talk) 16:55, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Team, we would really appreciate if you could add some details at the project page. Thank you. --✝iѵɛɳ२२४०†ลℓк †๏ мэ 17:59, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Tiven2240: I must say I am becoming increasingly confused about this. As far as I can see from the discussion above, there was little interest in folklore in previous years with only 14 articles in 2022 and only 15 articles in 2021. It had been our intention to address Feminism and Folklore in March. Would this not be a reasonable solution?--Ipigott (talk) 18:59, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Dear @Ipigott WIR has a beautiful list ready at Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by occupation/Folklore. We can encourage users to create articles using the list. Also we can provide an additional list if required. We will also be sharing this via social media channels for that we need a page so that we could redirect them to the WIR page for the contest. Regarding the timelines, WIR team is independent to organize it in Feb and March both or either. We will also be sharing a message to organisers soon to input their local prize requirements. We shall also support with the local winning prizes. @Gamaliel thanks for setting up the fountain for the project. Hope this helps. --✝iѵɛɳ२२४०†ลℓк †๏ мэ 04:59, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your explanations, Tiven2240, but my confusion actually stems from the relationship between "Feminism and Folklore" and Art&Activism which we have traditionally reserved for Women's History Month in March. Art&Activism has always led to enthusiastic participation. In March 2020, when the two were combined, we had 97 new or improved articles on Art&Activism but only eight on Folklore. One more major area of interest in February would tend to reduce involvement in the other priorities. That is why I suggested early on that we should include your initiative in the announcements on our invitation for February and make it a specific priority for March. If the "Feminism" aspect is intended to cover all other women's interests, it could possibly be combined with our priority for Women's History Month (where it has been suggested we should focus on Artists and Activists). You are of course always welcome to draw on and share our resources such as our redlists on folklore and related arts and crafts.--Ipigott (talk) 10:47, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would welcome comments from other contributors on this as it seems to be holding up the preparation of our invitation, which should be distributed within the next two or three days. (cc WomenArtistUpdates, Gamaliel).--Ipigott (talk) 10:56, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to pass the buck on this, but personally I don't have any feelings one way or the other, I just volunteered to run Fountain. I'll leave it to others to see how this fits into the scope of WIR's planned calendar. Gamaliel (talk) 14:45, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ipigott, I tuned out when I read that judges were needed and no one stepped up. I've done my bit for WiR February invite and pages. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:19, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your concerns, WomenArtistUpdates and am really sorry that you are not comfortable with recent developments. Thank you for everything you've done up to now. Your efforts here each month are always a great help and encourage us all to move forward in good time. I'll try to sort everything out over the next few hours. And Gamaliel, as you have responded so effectively to Rosiestep's wishes, despite my own concerns I'll prepare Feminism and Folklore to start in February and continue in March. That should also respond to repeated requests from Tiven2240.--Ipigott (talk) 07:08, 29 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@WomenArtistUpdates and Ipigott: Just FYI, WiR has participated in the Folklore event for a few years now, and has never had "judges". The Folklore Team doesn't seem to mind that we write but don't judge (e.g., who wrote how many articles). I should have mentioned this earlier; sorry about that. I hope this doesn't get in the way of us participating. (cc: Tiven2240 who may have more to add on this point.) And thank you, Ipigott, for drafting the event page. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:49, 29 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I trimmed the Fem+Folklore title to just Folklore per helpful viewpoint of Ipigott regarding conflict with our annual March initiative of Art+Activism (supporting Art+Feminism team). Okay with me if you wish to revert. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:33, 29 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah we have no issues if the organising team dosent wish to "judge" the articles. The fountain tool is created to track the number of articles created or improved during the timeframe of the contest. Once the contest is over the organisers can provide us the winners which we would provide local prizes. Also if you want the articles to be judged as per the criteria laid down the organisers are free to do so. We will send out a Google form to the organizers soon wherein they can add the local prize requirements for this contest on English Wikipedia together with Women in Red --✝iѵɛɳ२२४०†ลℓк †๏ мэ 17:36, 29 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mind being the "judge" unless there's some reason we want to avoid having anyone judge. Gamaliel (talk) 18:48, 29 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Gamaliel. If there are prizes, editors are more likely to contribute. I'm happy to see you have also added information on the Global contest to the event page. It now all looks very clear to me.--Ipigott (talk) 06:43, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Italian women edit

There was a suggestion on the main talk page, that we may want to run a focus on Italy, as a gesture of solidarity to WikiDonne? I've put it as a suggestion, but it is the kind of decision that probably needs deliberate consensus? Oronsay, Ipigott, WomenArtistUpdates, Lajmmoore, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle , Innisfree987, plus Antiqueight, Chocmilk03, Fuzheado, Gamaliel, Megalibrarygirl, Penny Richards, SusunW would welcome thoughts on this Lajmmoore (talk) 18:12, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That's a fantastic idea. Gamaliel (talk) 18:29, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My reading of the conversation further up the talk page was that WikiDonne really has no desire for WiR to get involved. I think we should respect their wishes. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 18:35, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I can't find that comment, but I admit I did a lot of skimming through a somewhat nauseating discussion. I want to respect the wishes of our fellow contributors but I do think this issue is larger and more important than the individuals involved and we should take a public stance on it. Gamaliel (talk) 18:45, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would prefer to take a softer approach and vote for Women by the Mediterranean as suggested by @Lajmmoore, below. But, again, will obviously abide by our collective decision. Oronsay (talk) 19:44, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Although it was my interest in the WikiDonne case that triggered my post on Italian women on the WIR talk page, I simply wished to highlight Italian women as a subject needing attention. Italy could, for example, be listed as our geofocus for February, together with the explanations I gave earlier: "Proportionally, Germany and France have significantly better coverage of women while little Sweden, with about a fifth of the population of Italy, has about two-thirds as many women's biographies." As the Geofocus slot is still empty, it would be easy to do something about it.--Ipigott (talk) 07:04, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for sharing your views inparticular @WomenArtistUpdates & @Oronsay - I'd be happy with a more cautious approach, I just didn't want the topic to be lost as a suggestion. Perhaps a compromise would be to skip Geofocus for Feb, but then start with Mediterranean and move to other watery boundaries across the year (the Caspian Sea would be good to include too!) Lajmmoore (talk) 10:19, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Lajmmoore: I really appreciate your emphasizing Italian women once more but your last comment leaves me rather confused. Are you suggesting we should shelve Italian women for the time being or do you think it should be somehow re-introduced at a later date? And if we are going for the Caspian and other seas for future geofocus topics (I certainly support this suggestion and also like Francophones and other language groups), does that mean there's no interest in my cities proposal or simply that no one noticed it? I really think we need to be more careful about how this section is presented. Pertinent suggestions seem to get lost in the confusion between "Firming up" and comments elsewhere. There also seems to be some confusion between items on our main WIR talk page and how they are introduced here (e.g. casting directors, etc.). There's also the matter of our contest which now seems to have been forgotten. As I think all this deserves attention, I'm also inviting reactions from Rosiestep, Oronsay, WomenArtistUpdates, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle , Innisfree987, Antiqueight, Chocmilk03, Fuzheado, Gamaliel, Megalibrarygirl, Penny Richards, SusunW and any other page watchers.--Ipigott (talk) 11:23, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I haven't responded to pings, real world is keeping me really busy and probably will through the end of February. That said, I'm working my way through WILPF activists, which usually lead me to the next one. I'm quite happy to work Italians into the focus of peace activists, but because my participation will be sporadic, I defer to what y'all decide. SusunW (talk) 14:44, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As mentioned by others, there are at least 2 ways of looking at this: go with Italian Women (focus on an important current issue, much like we did with Ukrainian Women in 2022); choose a broader geo topic, the more common WiR approach. Maybe we should decide on the approach first, but either way, I defer to consensus. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:42, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for coming in on this Rosiestep. I realize you are attempting to be diplomatic but what exactly would a "broader" geo topic look like? As far as I know, there is no Italian equivalent to Francophones and Italians would hardly feature strongly in the suggested sea-based "Mediterranean". I now realize it was a mistake for me to bring this up but I thought I should respond to Lajmmoore. To facilitate further progress in February, I bow to those who support an empty geofocus slot in the hope that it can indeed be filled with black women from around the globe. Rather than making any further comments on this page, I will simply try to write more articles about women in the slots that happen to be approved. Don't get me wrong. I think it's great that we have so many new suggestions as to how we should go forward. And I really appreciate the time and effort WomenArtistUpdates puts into this every month, making sure that we have an attractive set of new priorities to work on. As my 80th birthday is now drawing near, it looks to me as if I should be preparing for retirement.--Ipigott (talk) 21:29, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ipigott, to clarify, I meant either "Italian Women" or "let's close the book on that and move on with reviewing other geo possibilities". As for your retirement, that can certainly take many forms, and I wish you much happiness in that respect, but PLEASE, don't retire from WiR, at least not just yet! --Rosiestep (talk) 21:40, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I second Rosie's comment. I need you Ipigott If you want to retire, I'll support you in that, but I will be very, very sad to lose your insight and help. From a selfish stance, I would prefer you never retire from WIR. SusunW (talk) 22:38, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Rosiestep and SusunW for your kind comments. I have no intention of retiring from WIR but I have been trying to devote more time to writing new articles and less to discussions and other matters. I find it very satisfying, for example, that this month I have succeeded in contributing one new article a day to Peace and Diplomacy, covering interesting women from a variety of countries. I'm also happy to have been able to encourage so many contributors to join our project (already 14 this month), especially as quite a few of them have become really active. More generally, it also looks to me as if 2023 is getting off to a good start with 1,042 new women's biographies by 23 January compared to 917 on 23 December and 846 on 23 November. I hope we can maintain this positive trend by making sure editors are not faced with unreasonable reactions when learning how to edit or trying to contribute new articles and by letting seasoned contributors know how much we appreciate their efforts to write or improve articles about women. So all in all, despite some of my reactions to comments on this page, it really looks to me as if we can look forward to a bright future.--Ipigott (talk) 07:07, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rosiestep: In the light of your helpful suggestions, I've reconsidered this and have now created Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/258 on Mediterranean women which can either be used in February or perhaps at some future date. Alternatively, it can just be forgotten. I'll create the template if it's likely to go ahead. Others might like to alter the presentation, redlinks, etc.--Ipigott (talk) 16:37, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Geofocus ideas for Feb 2023 and ongoing edit

We're already more than halfway through the first month of the year and it's time, I feel, to start a discussion of this year's Geofocus. I note that ESEAP countries have been suggested for August, when Wikimania will be held in Singapore, facilitated by ESEAP.--Oronsay (talk) 00:03, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps we can revisit some of the ideas in Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Ideas#Geofocus ideas pitched several years ago? Any of those ideas resonate with anyone? Geofocus by language or Historical States that no longer exist. I don't know if redlists exist or could be created for these specific topics. Also, I think Canada fell by the wayside along the way. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 02:30, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Oronsay, for getting the ball rolling. How about going for cities, perhaps starting with capitals? We could take them by region, for example "Women from the Nordic capitals" (i.e. Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo and Stockholm). In addition to our red lists, we could look at the corresponding city-related listings and category lists in the appropriate languages. I'm pretty sure we could find lots of interesting women who have not yet been covered in English.--Ipigott (talk) 06:35, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Buried in those suggestions is one from me for Women whose Countries Share a Sea/Ocean e.g Women by the Mediterranean (or similar) would include France and Greece, but also Egpyt and Tunisia. You could do North Sea, Indian Ocean, Atlantic, Pacific, etc. Might be quite interesting. Lajmmoore (talk) 18:22, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There's also a suggestion from @Sahaib for Francophone countries, but I wondered if that could expand to Lusophone, Hispanophone, etc. Lajmmoore (talk) 18:23, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WomenArtistUpdates, Ipigott, Rosiestep, Lajmmoore, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle and all WIR helpers: Above is my attempt at next month's offerings. Not sure about placement of #Visible Wiki Women. Please make suggestions and help out.--Oronsay (talk) 02:49, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Oronsay! I'll get started on the page for the alphabet run Q & R. I think #Visible Wiki Women should be where you placed it, as an announcement. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 15:54, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I got the March 2023 Editathons board set up on Pinterest, ready for linking and pins when early-bird articles start to appear. Penny Richards (talk) 17:17, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all the work being done WRT March planning. I think the line-up is great. Regarding the question about what logo to use for the Art+Activism event, how about this one (rt-fem-logo-PH.png); it's colorful and it's wordless (other options would be fine, too). --Rosiestep (talk) 18:09, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Rosiestep Two of us are exploring the idea of subtly focusing this year's event on crafts as well as the ubiquitous painting and sculpting. Please red the conversation below. Could you take a look at my logo with the bun lady at a potter's wheel? WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 18:48, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi WomenArtistUpdates - Great idea, more emphasis on crafts (I wrote a biog this month on a Catalan lace-maker and learned a bit about that art form...) and I love the logo you've created, especially as it's WIR style vs. A & F style. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:07, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm drafting A+F now but will welcome contribs from others to ensure we cover all aspects. Oronsay (talk) 23:34, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Oronsay, The page looks good to me. I have added some material specific to craft and book artists. Looks like we will need a third pair of eyes for QC on this one. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 17:40, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ipigott, Rosiestep, Lajmmoore, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle and all WIR helpers, Would someone take a look through the pages on the to-do list and fix any errors noticed? Especially Art + Activism. Thanks. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 23:36, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Art+Act (#260) looks good to me. --Rosiestep (talk) 23:48, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And to me too, although I would point our that some of the red lists also appear applicable to Feminism and Folklore too, But that is certainly not a problem.--Ipigott (talk) 06:27, 24 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Oronsay and all, Do you think it is ready to go? WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:29, 25 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

      • Apologies if this is the wrong location (please move it if so), but perhaps one year (this year?) we can focus on artists in disciplines other than painting and sculpture for this? I know that a lot of the women in the Smithsonian American Art Museum's collection are represented in the Renwick, the craft collection - glass artists, ceramists, textile artists, jewelers, and so forth. And the National Museum of Women in the Arts has a large collection of art books - book artists seem to be a wildly underrepresented discipline here. I've often thought it might be interesting to try and make inroads in some of these fields. Especially given the fact that the two museum collections should each convey automatic notability, good for at least putting together a stub article. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 22:00, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ser Amantio di Nicolao, I think this is an intriguing idea. I have worked through the checklist for "This Present Moment: Crafting a Better World", the 50th anniversary show at the Renwick. BTW, 19h00s has done a wonderful job of adding fair use images to artists from that show. The checklist was a great resource, but I cannot find a way to filter for just the Renwick's collection on the SAAM site. Is there a redlist somewhere for Renwick artists? Also, I would be very interested in working on book artists. The NMWA (and the library) is closed for renovations. Do you know where there is a list of the art books in the library's holdings? Alternatively a redlist of book artists> Thanks WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 21:37, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think I know why you were having trouble finding Renwick artists on the SAAM site - they just redesigned their website so searching the collection directly through their site doesn't have great functionality right now. But you can definitely use the main Smithsonian collection search and search by department - here's a pre-filled search for all collection listings that are categorized as part of the Renwick department, within SAAM's collection, although I imagine some objects may not have the Renwick categorization as they were part of the SAAM collection before the Renwick was absorbed: si.edu
Don't have any help on NMWA though, their website is really lacking right now in terms of fullness of data. Even their regular collection search seems to be under construction, as many major works just aren't there when you search. 19h00s (talk) 22:19, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the Renwick filter 19h00s! Yeah, the new SAAM site is phone friendly (I guess?). NMWA abandoned their CLARA database and replaced it with ...nothing really. Just highlights from the collection. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 23:59, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@19h00s: Thanks for the assist on the Renwick: when I posted this suggestion SAAM was still using its old online catalog, and I'm honestly a little bit at sea with the new one, still. Hopefully it will get a bit more user-friendly with time.
As for NMWA, I know we've done edit-a-thons there before, so I wonder if we have contacts that can help draw up a list of artists in the collection? I agree that the functionality of their website leaves quite a bit to be desired. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:43, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ser Amantio di Nicolao, I will draft and send an e-mail to the librarian to see if NMWA has a catalogue of their artists books on line or in electronic form. Did you see the Julie Chen show that was up briefly in 2021? Gorgeous. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 02:31, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was just looking for the correct contact info and ran into this site Artists’ Books and Explore Artists’ Books in the LRC. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 02:58, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Closing the loop. I got a reply from NMWA and now have a list to work with to create a cs list of book artists in their collection. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 02:19, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@WomenArtistUpdates: Apologies for losing track on this - it's been a difficult few weeks. I'm glad to hear that we've finally got a list to work from, as well as some other sources to play with. Hopefully I can be a little more present in the next few weeks. As to the Chen show...I honestly don't remember, sorry. Much of the past couple of years has been a bit of a blur. Though I do know that I went to NMWA not too long before they closed, and I'm very much looking forward to their reopening. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:32, 21 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ser Amantio di Nicolao and 19h00s, I have added information about NMWA Book Artists collection and a link to the Renwick's database to Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/260. Geofocus: Mediterranean edit

Geofocus: Mediterranean was prepared in advance by User:Ipigott and ready to go in March.--Oronsay (talk) 19:08, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to stick this here and note that it could also play in to Visible women photo campaign. This book Almanacco della donna Italiana (in Italian). Florence, Italy: R. Bemporad & Figlio. 1925 has a ton of photos in it, {{Anonymous-EU}}{{PD-1996}}. I've uploaded Virginia Tango Piatti and Laura Orvieto, but don't have the skill to load the whole book and strip out the photos. Anyone want to give it a go? Victuallers said the same, he can only clip one at a time. If no one has the ability to do the whole book, maybe we just note it on the editathon pages? SusunW (talk) 14:38, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think the images are up to the standard of those Adam Cuerden would normally be interested in but perhaps he can help with this or suggest which other contributors might have the competence needed.--Ipigott (talk) 09:49, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Late Pass - trainer? London - Justice edit

I was contacted on our Twitter feed by Caoilfhionn Gallagher an international human rights lawyer. She made two points - 1. someone had made a suspicous article about her that looked as if someone (e.g. her) paid for it. I de-stubbed and de-templated that article. and 2. She had been just been let down as a speaker at an event and found herself free. She loves our project. I suggested we need a prestigious location and a trainer. She has offered her Inn or her Chambers in London. I'm asking here for a trainer and I've asked WMUK. Expenses (at least!) would be available. Keen to see this as a WIR event. Is it possible to extend our "Justice" theme to March 8th and to reuse it as the event page. Victuallers (talk) 16:05, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • WomenArtistUpdates Thats what I needed. I just need to find out that we have a trainer. I'm ill at the moment, so I'm hoping that WMUK or our followers come through. Meeting (and training) Caoilfhionn Gallagher should be worth the trip. Victuallers (talk) 08:49, 21 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That is so cool. I hope you find someone. SusunW (talk) 14:36, 21 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Victuallers and @WomenArtistUpdates - Do we need to do anything about about Justice for March invitation etc? Or will the proposed IWD editathon just use the page as it is? Oronsay (talk) 03:54, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry no reply as yet from WMUK I have asked for an update? Victuallers (talk) 10:29, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oronsay, Sounds like we should keep it off the invitation. I truly hope they find a facilitator, but that said I think it will be an in-person event if I have read the initial post correctly. Victuallers wanted permission/"the ok" to edit the landing page for the event should it happen. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 17:02, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Just got a reply from WMUK (went to part-time staff in-box) and they are on to it. I'm fairly certain its going ahead but it looks like in-person or hybrid will be its type. There will be a lot of on-line events so probable best to celebrate the location and advertise locally or for human rights/justice interest. So leaving it off the invite simplifies for small loss. Thanks for consideration. Victuallers (talk) 17:13, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for clarifying this, @Victuallers and @WomenArtistUpdates. Oronsay (talk) 17:17, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oronsay, Ipigott, Rosiestep, Lajmmoore, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle, SusunW, Chocmilk03, Penny Richards, Silver seren, {{u|PamD}, and all WIR helpers: How's the to-do listing for events? I think they should reflect the draft items for April. I'll take the Alphabet run, once I hear an "OK". Thanks WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:51, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Could we add a reminder of the fact that both our overall WiR project and the #1day1woman explicitly include "articles on women and their works", so articles on women's books can be listed at #1day1woman? I think we all tend to think of WiR as being about women's biographies only. PamD 21:21, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
See above in the Announcement section. It will end up in the April Invitation. Please adapt as you see fit. Oronsay (talk) 23:17, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
All looks good to me, WomenArtistUpdates. I'll start on Health, which I will draft from four previous health-related pages. Oronsay (talk) 23:11, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Great Oronsay! I did the Alphabet S & T.WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:53, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For anyone else wanting to try drafting an edithon page, Gender studies would be a good choice. A newbie would have last year's event to use as a template. Just give us a heads-up here that you are going to give it a try. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:53, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, Lajmmoore, as far as I am concerned you can sent out the invitations whenever you feel it is convenient. Looks as if it's going to be a busy month, full of all kinds of opportunities.--Ipigott (talk) 15:20, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good to go to me as well! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 18:30, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@WomenArtistUpdates & @Ipigott all done! Thanks for everyone! Looks like a great selection this month! Lajmmoore (talk) 07:52, 27 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Annual Apr initiatives edit

"Books by women"? edit

Although we mostly focus on biographies, our project page says Our Wikipedia WikiProject focuses on creating content regarding women's biographies, women's works, and women's issues. So should we join in with April's Every Book Its Reader campaign (see for more info), which is a campaign to increase quality content about books, literary works, and oral stories in Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikibooks, and Wikisource., and have "Books by women" as one of April's topics? PamD 10:39, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If not a separate "Books by women" edit-a-thon, we should at least include the link to #EveryBookItsReader in the Announcements section of our April invitation. Oronsay (talk) 01:41, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think the book article idea is an interesting one, but I don't think there are any redlists etc that we could use as a foundation for an event. I think it should probably be in the announcements section. Does anyone know of specific guidance on how to write articles about books (plot summary etc.)? WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 15:51, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For guidance on writing about books, I've found MOS:NOVELS helpful in the past, and there's also WP:NONFICTION. Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 19:39, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And WP:Notability (books) is useful too. PamD 08:04, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
How about we place the link to the event in "Announcements", and use something like " You can find information about writing articles about books at MOS:NOVELS and WP:NONFICTION. The essay WP:Notability (books) provides many tips." as the "Tip pf the Month". I think it would provide a nice opportunity for some of us to step out of the biography area for minute. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 17:00, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe also with the quote from our mission statement, above? Books do seem to come within the #1day1woman remit (not in its headline, but reading the text gives "creating or improving articles on women and their works"), so there's somewhere to list achievements. It would have been nice to show solidarity with a cross-wiki project like this one, but I guess we'd have had to find time to create a Crowdsourced list of probably notable redlinked titles. (Iris Murdoch has a few red linked titles ... there must be more, just a case of tracking them down!) PamD 18:41, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've just asked at the "Women Writers" wikiproject whether any one there has suggestions for a source list of notable red-linked or absent books. PamD 18:52, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I fully agree we should devote attention to "Books by women". We used to include these in our metrics but now we seem only to be concerned with biographies. Perhaps we can start recording pertinent articles in a new listing. I'm sure Rosiestep will be keen to support something along these lines.--Ipigott (talk) 17:40, 18 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Our metrics used to include all articles related to women's representation (women's biographies, their works (e.g., the books they wrote), and issues pertaining to women (e.g., women's suffrage, women's health). I'd support whatever initiatives/campaigns others devise in this regard. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:10, 18 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if wishes were horses... Somebody's gonna have to step up and take ownership of turning this into an event if it is going to happen. I don't see how that would be, so in lieu of someone from the group taking this on I think it best to use the announcement and monthly tip. I would really prefer this not get into a debate starting on the 20th when we start generating content for the April events. My 2 cents. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 18:21, 18 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As usual, WomenArtistUpdates, you have a sensible pragmatic solution here. I agree that an announcement is the best solution for April but I think we should seriously consider making "Books by women" a specific focus for one of the coming months. I would be happy to start compiling a separate list of pertinent new articles beginning on 1 April unless there are any objections. I've just noticed, by the way, that two of our most recent DYKs, The Scout Mindset created by Mx. Granger and Existential Physics by Silver seren are good examples of what can be done.--Ipigott (talk) 06:53, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Agree, sticking with the announcement makes sense for now, while pulling together some lists for the future. @Ipigott, I haven't really been involved in the "back end" of WIR previously so not sure how these things usually get pulled together, but let me know if there's anything I can help with that immediately springs to mind. Otherwise I'll keep an eye out for tasks. :) Chocmilk03 (talk) 08:45, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Good to hear you're interested, Chocmilk03. I've made some suggestions on WP Women writers. Maybe we should wait for a few days to see if there are other volunteers.--Ipigott (talk) 08:59, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ipigott I've taken the NYT list of 365 titles you found, and by putting it into and out of Excel I've started a draft list at User:PamD/booklist which I haven't finished checking yet - turned the authors and titles into links, plenty of blue, plenty of red, and I'm currently looking at the ones highlighted in orange (by the wonderful Gadget which identifies dab pages). Still need to hover over every link to make sure it points where I want it to, and to work further down the alphabet with my first checking, but need to do some real life stuff now: will continue. It will end up as one element we can offer as a Crowdsourced ... well, NYT-sourced... set of redlinks. PamD 11:50, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds absolutely wonderful, PamD. I was rather hoping someone would be clever enough to retrieve the redlinks from the list. Once you've sorted it out, it might be useful to post something on the main WiR talk page. The list actually came from the New York Public Library, not the NYT.--Ipigott (talk) 12:03, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

More book lists are available by clicking through this index. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:49, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Some others that are on my to-do list, PamD, Ipigott, include Vacation Guide to the Solar System by Jana Grcevich and Olivia Koski, Rise of the Rocket Girls by Nathalia Holt, Men Who Hate Women (not sure why this redirect exists) by Laura Bates, Resistance and Persecution by Anna Rosmus, and To the Last Bite by Alexis deBoschnek, to name a few.
One suggestion I'd give for making a redlist as a place to start is to use our existing articles on women authors and then snag all the books they've written. Not all of the books will be notable and have the sourcing available to make an article from, but it's a jumping off point to start. SilverserenC 15:22, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you stepper-uppers Chocmilk03, Silver seren, PamD, and Rosiestep. Would it make sense for you to plan this for Sep 2023 so that month would be a literary extravaganza? WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 17:52, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would be okay with that. It would certainly give us more time to ensure we have a more comprehensive redllist to use. And combining making articles on books with writers would make sense, since many of the authors of the books are also still redlinks. SilverserenC 18:53, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
September makes a lot of sense. With more time, we might end up with more CS redlists (or 1 very long redlist), e.g., poetry collections by women, novels by women, non-fiction books by women, books by pseudonymous women, etc. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:16, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In the meantime, it might be useful to add PamD's list and other suggestions to the Every Book resource page. Would it be useful for Women in Red to join the Every Book Its Reader campaign or should we just include a link in our April invitation? It certainly looks as if we already have a number of enthusiasts.--Ipigott (talk) 07:09, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My list isn't finished yet. The link to the list of navbox templates which Rosiestep gave above could be very useful if someone had the energy (or could work out an automated way) to produce a list of those with any red links. PamD 08:16, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PamD: Your list already seems very useful to me but if you can finish checking out the DABs, etc, by 1 April, then I think it would be an extremely useful resource for the Every Book campaign. As far as I can see, up to now they have had no special focus on women. I agree that Rosie's templates also offer opportunities and above we have a few other suggestions on how to provide more focus on women. Maybe we could bring this all together on one crowd-sourced page.--Ipigott (talk) 15:22, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ipigott Yes, I think I should be able to get it polished up by then... got a few real life things going on at the moment, but it's light relief! PamD 15:30, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

We already have redlists! Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Books includes crowd-sourced and Wikidata titles (917 names); and also a Wikidata redlist, Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels/ArticlesNeeded/Novels written by women (240 names). I am planning to add some redlinks for prize-winning books to the crowd-sourced list and putting them under a Country heading, in my case Australia. This option may appeal to other non-USA based contributors like Chocmilk03, Ipigott, Victuallers and others.--Oronsay (talk) 01:49, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That said, I don't think we need to introduce a fifth event in April as it will fit well into our annual Women Writers campaign in September. Oronsay (talk) 01:52, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, we already have the redlists! They're great, especially the novels one which includes the "site links" column so can be sorted to flag up titles which already have articles on other wikis.
I'm so sorry I didn't investigate and find these before making the suggestion. Given that we have got those lists, I really think it would be good if we could include Books in April to work alongside that Meta project, in the spirit of co-operation between projects and wikipedias.
I've got no experience in preparing the files and templates for an editathon but presumably it's just a matter of carefully modifing existing files, and would be happy to help. PamD 08:25, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PamD, I wasn't following this thread closely enough as I missed the headline, m:EveryBooksItsReader 2023, the campaign on Meta. In light of the Meta campaign, I think it's a great idea for WiR to include Books in our April line-up of events ("in the spirit of co-operation between projects and wikipedias"). Maybe we'd gain some editors at September's Women Writers event as a result of this participation. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:36, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PamD: Now that we've identified lots of red link sources, I agree with Rosie that we should go ahead with this in April. I'm pretty busy today but tomorrow I'd be only too happy to put together a meetup page.--Ipigott (talk) 16:25, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant. I see that one the core organisers, Bridges2Information is a WiR member. PamD 16:52, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@PamD Thank you for looping me into this conversation! It's great to see the conversation and involvement of WiR! @Nferranf is also on the core committee and researches the gender gap in Wikipedia/Wikidata as a professor at the University of Barcelona. I am personally and professionally interested in improving the coverage of books that are on "banned" lists for schools and public libraries in the US. Many of the books on the banned lists are by women and non-binary folks. Thank you for supporting this campaign! Bridges2Information (talk) 20:09, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PamD, Bridges2Information Good. I've added "Books by women" to the Firming up list above and amended the Announcement. We still have a few days to work on pages before we need to get the invitation out.--Oronsay (talk) 20:31, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oronsay Thanks. I've reached "H" in my cleanup of the NYPL list - there are an interesting number of typos (The Well of Lonliness etc), and red links caused by nonstandard capitalisation, for a list published by a library, but it's very satisfying tracking down some of the originally-red-linked authors! Should be able to get to Z in a day or two. PamD 21:55, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PamD: I've created the meetup page and would be happy to add your redlist as soon as it is ready. Just let me know. Perhaps it would also be useful to provide a link from Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Books. And Rosiestep, do you think WiR should register with the Meta campaign here or should we just allow individual contributors to register if they wish to do so?--Ipigott (talk) 09:58, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ipigott It would be great if you added an event/program to the campaign page. Then encourage people to add themselves to the event/program, if they wish? Again, thank you for supporting #EveryBookItsReader! Bridges2Information (talk) 19:36, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Rosiestep: Please go ahead with this if you wish.--Ipigott (talk) 20:48, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ipigott, I'm not sure what I'm being asked to do. Hi, Bridges2Information! Glad to see you here. While I serve on the WMF Board of Trustees, I am only able to serve as an advisor at WiR vs. an active role. Women in Red being a "flat" organization, everyone is empowered to take the lead once in a while. So it would be much appreciated if you or others from the main team encouraged folks to add themselves to the event/program. Thank you kindly! --Rosiestep (talk) 23:19, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Rosiestep and @Ipigott We can do that! Thank you! Bridges2Information (talk) 23:22, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Rosiestep and @Ipigott I have created a program in the Campaign dashboard. I will add it, along with a link to the meetup page to the Meta Activities. Thank you!! Bridges2Information (talk) 23:35, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bridges2Information As you would be aware, many of us edit across all the Events and elsewhere. The Dashboard will capture all our edits if we sign on there. If you are OK with this, I'm happy to sign on to it. Oronsay (talk) 01:54, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oronsay, I had the same question. :) --Rosiestep (talk) 02:02, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Oronsay @Ipigott @Rosiestep Yes, I thought about that, BUT, I think I figured out the workaround. I created the event to ONLY track the Categories: Writers, Literature, and Books. You can see it at the bottom of this page. Therefore, it will ignore the edits outside of these categories for the WiR event. Bridges2Information (talk) 02:37, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bridges2Information Could we have a bit of punctuation there, so that rather than "Women in Red Books by Women April 2023" it reads something like "Women in Red: Books by Women, April 2023"? (Nothing to do with Red Books). PamD 08:15, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@PamDHi, Yes, I tried to put a colon in when I first created it, but the dashboard doesn't allow colons. So, I've just changed it to this, which does change the URL. https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Women_in_Red/Women_in_Red_-_Books_by_Women,_April_2023?enroll= Bridges2Information (talk) 22:11, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bridges2Information Thanks, that looks better. PamD 22:27, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ipigott With the kind help of @Oronsay, I think the list at User:PamD/booklist is now ready to go and could be copied to somewhere appropriate ... unless you think we should weed it to remove the entries where both author and title are blue? It'll be a bit tedious and possible error-prone (everything is error-prone: I've been surprised how many typos we found!), and I'm not sure it's needed as it's so easy to tell red from blue (does that work for colour-blind readers?). I've added a bit of a preamble. It could be formatted differently if anyone wanted to work on it further. PamD 08:07, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
On the other hand now I look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Books, perhaps the red-linked titles should be copied out into that page as a new section "NYPL 365 books for IWD 2017"? But then we'd lose the redlinked authors ... ? (There are so many titles on that list already that I don't think I'd have bothered to work up the NYPL list if I'd known we had such a rich resource already. My fault for not checking our files.) PamD 08:26, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • PamD: I think it would be very useful to include the list, specifying that it was prepared by the New York Public Library. It provides many useful suggestions which are not obvious from our other lists. Unless you strongly object, I will go ahead and include it later today.--Ipigott (talk) 09:24, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm having a little play in Excel to try to sort it and put titles before authors ... will let you know. PamD 12:27, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ipigott @Oronsay Well I've spent far too much time messing around with Excel (it doesn't like handling strings of characters which include "*" or "[", I'm beginning to learn), but with the help of a nice utiliy Excel2wiki I've now created two sublists: User:PamD/NYPL 365 red-linked books and User:PamD/NYPL 365 red-linked authors. Not sure what best to do with them, but for now I've linked them from the top of the full list. Enough. Past my bedtime! PamD 00:16, 25 March 2023 (UTC) Updated after renaming the files. Main list is now User:PamD/NYPL 365.PamD 15:18, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PamD: I think the original list was the easiest to follow and I've included it among the Books by women redlists. Thanks for all your trouble. It will be interesting to see how far it leads to new articles. Maybe you'll be creating some yourself.--Ipigott (talk) 06:36, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @Ipigott
Well I'll have to find at least one to create, otherwise I'll break my almost-complete track record (I missed out on Ada Lovelace Day, I seem to remember) of contributing something to every WiR editathon! PamD 15:13, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bridges2Information: Thank you for your explanations. I'm rather confused about the categories. I'm pretty certain all the articles we create under "Books by women" will have subcategories relating to the two you mention. Will those be acceptable too? What is perhaps more important to address is individual participation. From the link we have included to your Campaign on our meetup page, if I click on Participate I find explanations as at how how groups can set up their own dashboard but it is difficult to see how individuals can join or submit their articles directly to a central dashboard (if one exists). Perhaps this could be clarified on your site or perhaps you could provide explanations here which we could add to our meetup page. I'm afraid I am not ready to take personal responsibility for all participants/articles stemming for WiR's focus on "Books by women". I hope we can find a straightforward solution. As you can see, we've devoted considerable time an effort to measures liable to contribute to your Campaign. It would be a pity if our contributions are not taken into account.--Ipigott (talk) 06:53, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies. I see you have already created a page for Women in Red. I will include this on "Books by women". Thanks.--Ipigott (talk) 07:00, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ipigott I feel the paragraph about the link to the Dashboard might be better placed under the Participants heading. I know that I tend to dive in without reading the whole of the introduction to each event and it would be a shame if members' contributions are not counted in the #EveryBookItsReader campaign. In this instance out of courtesy, I have chosen to make the suggestion, rather than being bold and moving it. Oronsay (talk) 07:23, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oronsay: I was following the example of Folklore but I think you have a point. Maybe the safest way is simply to mention it twice as when I add articles to meetup pages I don't necessarily look at the introduction. I¨ll take care of it.--Ipigott (talk) 07:30, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ipigott That's a better idea. Thank you. Oronsay (talk) 07:32, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ipigott Hi all, I'm sorry I'm behind on the conversation. I am only able to check this conversation this one time today, and will check again later this evening. The categories captured by the dashboard drill down 3 subcategory levels (that is the most the Programs/events dashboard will allow). However, if we determine more categories need to be added then we can do that, easily. Even after the program begins. If we change the categories halfway into April, the dashboard will go back and capture all the data. I'm having difficulty explaining, I admit. This is where typing isn't quite sufficient to make sure I'm making myself understandable. My apologies. Bridges2Information (talk) 17:06, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Geofocus? edit

I can't seem to find any discussion about Geofocus for this year, apart from August when we suggest focusing on ESEAP member countries to coincide with Wikimania 2023. I have a vague memory that we might follow our Alphabet Run for women's names with one for countries, starting in July. Thoughts please.--Oronsay (talk) 20:36, 18 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Oronsay, Well we certainly have lists of countries, and redlists for most of those countries. It looks like the spread over letters is fine. Which would be preferable to our core contingent - running through names again or switching over to countries? I am happy with either assuming we start up in July. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 22:52, 18 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, the conversation about a geofocus run is on this page down at Ideas#Geofocus_A-Z WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 17:39, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Tip of the month edit

Perhaps something on the lines of:

"When writing about a book, check WP:NBOOK for notability, then see MOS:NOVEL, WP:NONFICTION or WP:POETRYSTANDARDS for guidance."

In line with our link to the April books campaign? PamD 11:45, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks PamD! This looks perfect to me. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 17:40, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
