Location and General Description of Property

The railroad of Meridian, Brookhaven and Natchez Railroad Company, hereinafter called the Meridian, Brookhaven and Natchez, is a single-track line, from Brookhaven, Miss., to a gravel pit, 6.213 miles.

Introductory

The Meridian, Brookhaven and Natchez is a corporation of Mississippi, having its principal office at Chicago, Ill. The company is controlled by The Mississippi Valley Company, a holding company of the Illinois Central, through ownership of its entire outstanding capital stock. On the other hand, the records do not indicate that this company, itself, controls any common-carrier corporation. The property of the Meridian, Brookhaven and Natchez has always been operated by the Illinois Central or by a controlled company of the latter.

The accounting records of the company were not obtained, therefore no information can be given from its accounts regarding its financial dealings, corporate operations, or investments. However, certain data were obtained from the records of the Illinois Central.

Corporate History

The Meridian, Brookhaven and Natchez was incorporated March 7, 1882, by special act of the Legislature of Mississippi. On June 6, 1888, its property was sold at foreclosure sale and conveyed to the Illinois Central by special master's deed. The company was reorganized on February 18, 1891, without any change of name, and necessary papers were filed on March 24, 1891, under the general laws of Mississippi. On the same date of reorganization, February 18, 1891, the Illinois Central sold and conveyed to the company, all the property, rights, and franchises previously acquired at judicial sale.

Development of Fixed Physical Property

The owned mileage of the Meridian, Brookhaven and Natchez amounting to 6.213 miles, and extending from Brookhaven to Gravel Pit, Miss., was all acquired by construction. The road was completed some time between 1882 and 1888.
