The railroad of Mammoth Cave Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad located entirely within the State of Kentucky and extending from Mammoth Cave to Glasgow Junction a distance of 8.366 miles. The carrier also owns yard and side tracks totaling 0.19 mile. Its road thus embraces 8.556 miles of all tracks owned.


Corporate history and development of fixed physical property.—The carrier was incorporated under the general laws of Kentucky for a term of 50 years beginning April 1, 1900. Articles of incorporation were filed in Simpson County, Ky., on March 7, 1900. The date of organization of the carrier is not disclosed by the records reviewed. The principal office is located at Franklin, Ky. The carrier acquired its property by purchase under foreclosure sale in 1898 from a predecessor [incorporated 1874] bearing the same name as that of the carrier, the affairs remaining in the hands of a receiver until some time during the year 1900 pending payment of the purchase price. Details are not available with regard to the construction of this property by the carrier's predecessor other than that an agreement was entered into for its construction on July 7, 1886, with the Mammoth Cave Construction Company. Since its acquisition the carrier has operated its property with its own organization.
