Location and general description of property.—The railroad of the Asherton and Gulf Railway Company, herein cajled the carrier, is a single-track, standard-gauge, steam railroad, extending northwestwardly from Artesia Wells to Asherton, Tex., 32.489 miles. The carrier also owns 3.295 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 35.784 miles of all tracks owned.


CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated January 14, 1905, under the general laws of the State of Texas as the Nueces Valley, Rio Grande and Mexico Railway Company for the stated purpose of constructing a railway in a westerly and northwesterly direction from near Aransas Pass, Tex., to near Del Rio, Tex., about 200 miles. The name was changed to Asherton and Gulf Railway Company on March 9, 1909. The date of its organization was not determined from the records reviewed.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The entire road, 32.489 miles, was acquired through construction. Work was begun on a railroad grade between Artesia and Carrizo Springs, Tex., by Word & Lee, contractors, in February, 1905, but was discontinued in May, 1905, after about 10 miles of road had been graded. Construction was resumed in 1908, following a change in control of the carrier. The section between Artesia Wells and Light, about 12 miles, wns placed in operation on June 27, 1909, and the remainder of the road on August 2, 1909. The work was performed by the J. F. Burns Railroad Construction Company, contractors. The records do not indicate that the contractors were affiliated with the carrier.
