T8612, hm, the citation seems a bit confusing. That is, if I'm right, and (as per ZDB) this is actually not an issue/volume of a journal but rather a volume in a monographic series, which also explains the multitude of different OCLC entries for this work (there are many, many more than those provided above). Again, I'm not sure if I'm right but if I am, this should also be available in my library. For Holy Roman Empire

I'm interested in the information about Regensburg being viewed as the de facto capital by other countries, so I'd like those pages to verify the content about it.

@WhisperToMe: sent. --Worldbruce (talk) 23:56, 22 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Received! The pages I saw don't seem to mention Regensburg. It's possible the person who added that citation got the pages wrong or used a different edition, but I can't really tell what other edition there would be. I found other pages from the book on Google Books that did talk about Regensburg and did talk about France and Russia having envoys in Regensburg, so my guess is the page numbers were wrong... WhisperToMe (talk) 20:02, 25 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Worldbruce and WhisperToMe: Was the whole essay sent or just the pages requested? I am unfamiliar with how RX usually works. Srnec (talk) 20:38, 25 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Srnec: For this request only the pages requested were. Either outcome could happen (depending on how the request is phrased), especially if the pages and chapter line up (they seemed not to in this case). Anyway the content which did support some of the stuff was on pages 69 and 70. If you want the essay you can request whatever chapter is for pages 69 and 70. WhisperToMe (talk) 20:43, 25 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Srnec: Also, for legal reasons, some users cannot send you pages that are not specifically requested, so if you request pp. 122-23 and 132, you really should expect to receive only these exact pages. But as WhisperToMe says, you can always request the chapter the contains these pages, or something like that. (In many cases, you can find the table of contents somewhere on the internet. E.g. here's https://opac.nebis.ch/objects/pdf/z01_978-0-19-960297-1_01.pdf the one for this work. "Somewhere" usually means either Google Books or in a German or Swiss library catalogue. [UK/US libraries generally have copyright concerns about publishing scans of TOCs.]) — Pajz (talk) 22:21, 25 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@WhisperToMe: The book you linked to on GBooks is not the same book. I actually have a hard copy of Peter Wilson's The Holy Roman Empire, 1495–1806. Confusingly, there are three recent works with almost the exact same title: the work edited by Evans, Schaich and Wilson, which contains the essay you requested; the work by Wilson you linked to; and a work edited by Evans and Wilson with the same title but with the subtitle A European Perspective. The Seattle Times archives: Newsbank edit

Per talk page discussions, it seems that Caroline Brady died in Bellevue Washington, on 5 November 1980. I have been unable to find anything resembling an obituary for her, perhaps hindered by the undercoverage of Washington newspapers on Newspapers.com and NewspaperArchive.com. The Seattle Public Library, however, has online access to a number of newspapers, including, with a library card, The Seattle Times (link). Does anyone have a library card, and if so, would you be willing to search through the archive to see if there is any coverage of Brady, particularly an obituary or death notice? Thanks, Usernameunique (talk) 16:07, 14 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I believe anyone with a subscription to Newsbank can see the Seattle Times archives using this trimmed link. Cheers, gnu57 17:24, 14 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Glorious Engine: That quote is from the article prose, not the cited book. Ideally we need page numbers, but quotes from the book may also help if it is available electronically. —Bruce1eetalk 09:48, 14 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
And also the page that contains this quote: "Simon Peter said to them: Let Mary go forth from among us, for women are not worthy of the life. Jesus said: Behold, I shall lead her, that I may make her male, in order that she also may become a living spirit like you males. For every woman who makes herself male shall enter into the kingdom of heaven" Mimihitam (talk) 07:40, 14 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, sent to Glorious Engine and Mimihitam (different documents). However, I might have overlooked something here since the 2004 edition is not in the Library of Congress catalogue from which I concluded that it's probably just a reprint of the original (1992) edition. However, Amazon suggests that the 2004 edition is "revised" (which, on the other hand, still doesn't necessarily mean there have been changes), so I'm actually not sure if the copies are helpful. Anyway. As to the copies for User:Mimihitam, note that I didn't find the exact quote but what appears to be a different translation. Page 65 is from the translation contained in the volume, page 121 from a section titled "A Reading" by Harold Bloom, pp. 111-121. — Pajz (talk) 21:39, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The Economist article from 1939 (available via Gale, etc.) edit

I need the full text of this obituary [4] from The Economist, the week of 11 March 1939 (approximately; Heath's death was 8 March 1939 and it says he died "Wednesday last").

First line of the obit is: "A Great Underwriter.—Mr Cuthbert Heath, who died on Wednesday last, was one of the great men of the City of London. His whole working life was devoted to insurance, for he became a Lloyd's underwriter while still a very young man and he remained a Lloyd's underwriter till his death."

[GoogleBooks says Volume 134 page 510, but that appears to be for the entire bound volume.]

I think it is just one paragraph, not an entire article, on a page that is probably about news in general or obituaries.

The historical archive of The Economist which covers that date is available via Gale (and possibly other sources):

In addition to the text of that obit, I need to know the issue date, the page number of the obit, and the overall title of the article or page.

For: an article on Cuthbert Heath.

Usernameunique, interesting indeed, but the link goes through my library's proxy server (which is apparently IP address agnostic), so it's not suitable for inclusion in a reference here. And will hopefully be dead once the session ends. Best, — Pajz (talk) 18:48, 5 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Pajz, do the links to The Times used in Herbert Maryon work for you? They have been there for a year or two, at least. I just checked and two of them direct me to a login page, but the rest go straight through to the article—similarly, if I click on a link to see something broader (e.g., the entire archive of The Times), it asks me to log in. I can remove the URL if you like, but I'm not sure why it is an issue, so long as it is likely to remain active for the foreseeable future. --Usernameunique (talk) 19:01, 5 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

{{resolved}} Could I get page 100-112 of this book?

I plan to use the source to expand several Iran-related articles, such as the Sasanian Empire etc.

Thanks, --HistoryofIran (talk) 14:17, 30 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

HistoryofIran, I have glanced across this once and IIRC, seemed to be a reprint of this to large extents. Any comments? WBGconverse 14:44, 30 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I think that might be the one. --HistoryofIran (talk) 15:12, 30 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
2010 is the year of publication of the digital edition (see explore.bl.uk). If you browse to the copyright notice in the Google Books version, you'll notice that it's simply a copy of the 2005 book. Google Books (and, as a result, Wikipedia) is full of these misleading publication years and ISBNs. — Pajz (talk) 15:45, 30 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

...can someone check a page number...? edit

{{resolved}}

Hope this isn't too meta, and I don't really need anything, just if someone could double check a page number? This below appears to have the correct page range, but I found it on a scrap of paper so I can't actually be sure it's for this book...it might get noticed at the peer review, you see  ;)

Word of warning, it's in French. I get nothing from Gbooks or the BNF I'm afraid.

  • Febvre, L. (1947). "Marc Bloch et Strasbourg: Souvenirs d'une Grande Histoire". In Université de Strasbourg, Faculté des Lettres (ed.). Mémorial des Années 1939-1945. Paris: Les Belles Lettres. pp. 165–181. OCLC 503753265.
@Serial Number 54129: After digging around GBooks snippets, this suggests 171-193. Same range cited here and here. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 23:51, 7 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've requested the volume (before you added your comment) but I also expect that you are correct. — Pajz (talk) 08:31, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • @MrLinkinPark333: I agree with Pajz, that looks spot on. Many thanks indeed! That's really useful and a nice bit of detective work :) cheers! Pajz, I put you to enough trouble here on a regular basis, so feel free to cancel that request. Thanks awfully for going to the trouble though! ——SerialNumber54129 08:41, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Serial Number 54129, makes sense, will do :). I'll mark this as resolved. — Pajz (talk) 08:54, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Pajz: don't suppose your GBooks shows you pp.280–282 of this, does it? I've got a gap from 175-192, and the German one was even worse—nothing after p.120! ——SerialNumber54129 13:58, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Serial Number 54129, partially (281+282). Not sure I understand what you mean by "the German one". — Pajz (talk) 17:19, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Pajz:, sorry, I meant the German-language GBooks page for that book. NOt sure how I got there, actually, but I did! ——SerialNumber54129 17:25, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Serial Number 54129, ok. Well, I'm not really following. If you want to request pages 280-282 and/or 175-192, that is something I may be able to help with (not through Google Books, however, since several pages are missing from the preview). Best, — Pajz (talk) 17:34, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
