Welcome! On October 11, 2013 from 1-5 PM, the William Blake Archive and Kansas State's Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art will be cosponsoring a William Blake Editathon as part of the GLAM-Wiki cooperation with the Archive. For more information on what an edithathon is see http://editathon.org/ . At the editathon, we will be working with Mark Crosby, an editor for the William Blake Archive and professor at K-State, to improve the content of several high profile pages related to William Blake's art and poetry. Also, we will have original print copies of Blake's illustrations of two other artist's works (Robert Blair's The Grave (poem) and Benjamin Heath Malkin's Father's Memoirs of His Child), and a small talk explaining the works by Mark Crosby. Wikipedians and Volunteers will be joined at the editathon by students from one of Crosby's classes who will be working on other Blake articles as a class assignment. Snacks and WiFi will be provided by the Beach Museum but please bring your own computers (a few extra laptops will be on hand, if you don't have one available). Editathons are great opportunities to meet other Wikipedians and to learn more about the dynamics of cultural institutions!

Schedule edit

  • 12:30-1:00 - Arrive at the Beach Museum
  • 1:00-1:20 - Introduction from the Beach Museum and Brief Informational discussion from Mark Crosby about Blake and his materials
  • 1:20-1:40 - Introduction to Wikipedia editing- how to ad references, and create new content
  • 1:40-5 - Break up into groups to edit pages on the "Content focus areas" section, including occasional breaks to go explore the Museum
  • 5:20 - Possible retreat to Aggieville for dinner and/or drinks and good company

Getting to the Beach Museum edit

The Marianna Kistler Beach Museum is located near the corner of 14th St. and Anderson Ave in Manhattan, Kansas. For directions and parking instructions see the information available on the Beach Museum's Webpage. We will be meeting in the UMB Theater, the large room on the East end of the building on the second floor of the Museum. Parking is free for visitors to the museum in the parking lot adjacent to the Museum, however, make sure to register the vehicle with the Museum at the Information Desk on the second floor. Their is also free public parking across Anderson in Aggieville.

In person edit

In person participants will have opportunities to interact with Wikipedia editors, Beach Museum Staff, and Mark Crosby from the Blake Archive. Snacks and Wi-Fi will be provided.

  • Without having access to the material or familiarity with the content I'll leave the content to those present and with knowledge, however I will absolutely review and provide markup assistance to the editors creating content. Also, these events occasionally attract unwanted attention from users who like to cause trouble and since I often patrol recent changes, new pages, and review revisions I'll make sure no vandalism slips through while productive edits are going on. Won't be able to attend, but interested in future events edit

If you cannot attend but would be interested in hearing about future events in Manhattan, Topeka, Lawrence or other parts of Kansas, please add yourself to our invite list for the region.

Results edit

The group for the event was a little smaller then expected: as is often the case with academic communities, many people doing many things at many times. However, for an event that didn't draw many experienced Wikipedians (there are few in Kansas and the time of the week prevented attendence from that small community), we got a fair amount done. Beyond teaching 5 new editors how to edit Wikipedia and Wikisource, the volunteers got a chance to learn more about Blake's works and contributed to both Wikipedia and the Wikisource! The event was also one of the first times that the Beach Musuem has included outside volunteers in an active event related to the museum and it's community.
