(Mt Erebus disaster) - Clearly not a stub but I was surprised by how little there was on this. Its not exactly a sraightforward subject but one that is clearly deserving of better coverage. There is little discussion of the most probable reason for the crash (i.e. the coordinates being set without the crew being notified). Currently Mt Erebus disaster redirects to this but I would suggest that we re-name it Mt Erebus Disaster and set up a redirect from Air New Zealand Flight 901

Contiki Tours edit

This is up for deletion but looks like it will be kept. If it is indeed kept, I believe it is a worthy candidate for a workover. This is a notable company in terms of its impace on New Zealand youth, and deserves some attention.

    As Weta was nominated first, I think we go with that before this. Although, I don't think this will be as controversial as there are less people with strong views on it.     Actually, what we do in nine days time is promote whichever article currently has the most support votes, with special provisions in case of a tie. If you don't want to see this article as the next collaboration, hold off voting for it until after that. New Zealand Police sexual misconduct trials edit

I'm not too fussed about the exact title, but we need an article on the Louise Nicholas trial which would also cover the new case against the same three men. What we currently have is a small section at New Zealand Police#Historic_sexual_misconduct. It's a problematic subject because there's a minefield of suppression orders on details of both cases. There are earlier cases which the article could cover as well. There's lots of material in newspapers; not sure about other resources available.

Bay villa edit

A distinctive piece of New Zealand architecture from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. I haven't been able to find much in the way of good web sources, although this pdf file has some good material in it: [1]. I suspect there will be plenty in the architecture sections of public libraries.

Comment: This idea was raised when an editor was adding very detailed information to the Foreign relations of New Zealand article which seemed to me and others to be out of keeping with the style of that article. The situation was largely resolved by that editor creating articles on specific bilateral relations between New Zealand and other countries. Photo competition edit

As a change from the usual COTF, I propose a photo/illustration competition. For the period of the two weeks this COTF runs, photos uploaded to either en Wikipedia or the commons, under a suitable licence (either GFDL or CC), and used to illustrate a New Zealand-related article, will be eligible to be declared the NZCOTF photo of the quarter. People uploading such photos will need to declare them on a page to be provided. We can either have a vote to determine the winner, or agree on someone to judge - I would suggest getting someone with considerable photographic experience, but not regularly involved with the New Zealand articles (perhaps we could ask some of the regulars at WP:FPC).

I noticed that Category:New Zealand, or more specific the sub-categories, are all over the place. So I propose the collaboration (which is a tad quiet) be used to clean them up and make all the categories logical, place articles into correct categories etc.

List of New Zealand feature films edit

I nominate this article because it's such an awful list. Why? Well lets see.

  • There are far to many red links and in alot of cases the blue links link to the wrong article.
  • The list is incomplete with a large amount of films missing.
  • Inaccurate dates and even names.
  • The list is not great to look at.

A list of NZ films can be found at the IMDB and a few other websites such as the New Zealand Film Commissions. This is also a good template to work from.

Jean Batten edit

The best known New Zealander in the 1930s, according to the article. Her life is interesting and there seem to be plenty of online sources, plus the biography should be readily available in public libraries. The article doesn't even begin to do her justice - it doesn't mention her comeback in the 1970s, or the mystery surrounding her death. Nominated 16 October 2008.

Category:New Zealand rugby union biography stubs edit

This one's a bit different, since it isn't a single article...have a look at the rugby bios that are listed as stubs - Stu Wilson, Todd Blackadder, Eric Tindill, Wilson Whineray, Brian Lochore, Grant Fox... it should be relatively easy to get some of these up to speed, and it's frankly a disgrace that some of these articles on top proponents of our national game are only stubs. There's plenty of info about quite a few of these people both online and in hard-copy sources like Men in Black and the Encyclopedia of New Zealand Rugby. Nominated 16 October 2008.

Charles Upham edit

A New Zealander who was well known in the 1941 during the battle of Crete. He went on to become the most decorated British and Commonwealth participant in WW2. Little is known of this man, as he was overshadowed by other heroes in the war, such as Audie Murphy and Douglas MacArthur. Naturally, I agree with Jean Batten too. Nominated 26 October 2008.

Employment Relations Amendment Act 2008 edit

A controversial bill to allow employers with less than 20 staff members to more readily dismiss employees within 90 days of their hire. The government has said it intends to pass the bill under urgency before the end of December. Nominated 10 December 2008.

Leaky building syndrome edit

The title is open to debate. Leaky homes is more widely used on the internet, but I wanted a slightly more formal term. Boy racers edit

There's an existing section at Boy racer#New Zealand which needs citations and could be split off and expanded to cover the legal and social issues surrounding the subculture. Joseph Claude Sinel edit

Largely forgotten in his home country but still widely referred to overseas, this Kiwi was an important and influential pioneer in graphic design/architecture/inventing etc. Our stub doesn't do him justice. See this for a glimpse of his achievements. Nominated 23 May 2009.

People honoured in the Birthday Honours 2009 edit

Following on from a discussion at the WP:New Zealand Wikipedians' notice board#AfD of John Stuart Yeates about whether the receipt of honours automatically makes someone sufficiently notable to warrant a Wikipedia article, I suggest we examine the list of people who received honours for the 2009 Queen's Birthday and consider adding to/improving existing articles, creating new articles, or adding mention of the people to appropriate articles on eg community groups. Per that discussion, please don't create articles on the people unless there are multiple reliable sources available.   2. Support in principle. We have articles on agricultural show and field day, which deal mainly with Australia, and on the Royal New Zealand Show and National Agricultural Fieldays.     Possibly - either that or start the new article and invite the Aussies to take part and give their side of the story on A&P shows. Mind you, that would probably mean doubling-up information from Field day. If the terms used in both countries it's even more perplexing that there wasn't even a redirect there (I've redirected it to field day for the time being at least). New Zealand native bee edit

I have added a par to Bee about our native bee, namely:

"In New Zealand scientists discovered that three genera of native bees have evolved to open flower buds of the native mistletoe Peraxilla tetrapetala. The buds cannot open themselves but are visited by birds such as the tui and bellbird which twist the top of the ripe bud. That action releases a mechanism which causes the petals to suddenly spring open, giving access to the nectar and pollen. However, when observing the native bees in the Canterbury province in the South Island, the scientists were astonished to see the bees biting the top off the buds, then pushing with their legs, occasionally popping open the buds to allow the bees to harvest the nectar and pollen, and therefore aid in the pollination of the mistletoe which is in decline in New Zealand. Nowhere else in the world have bees demonstrated ability to open explosive bird-adapted flowers.[1]"

Seems to me we could collaborativeyl develop a substantial article about these clever critters, and our other native bees too (which many people have observed but think are overgrown flies!). These days I only have time to sporadically drop in and check my watchlist and do a bit of fiddling here and there, so for a while at least I can't research and develop articles.   2. Support. Articles on individual bee species don't appear to be well developed in Wikipedia. The three native bees Kaiwhakahaere is talking about are a species of Leioproctus, Hylaeus agilis and Lasioglossum sordidum. Rather than starting articles on these three species, I suggest a single article on New Zealand native bees would be useful.
