Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/Assessment/Fields

The field parameter in the maths rating template is a rough and ready subdivision of the coverage of the mathematics project into broad fields. Its purpose is to break up assessed articles into more manageable groups and to keep track of progress within each area. It also helps editors with some particular expertise or interests to find articles to which their contributions would be particularly useful.

The fields, field tags, and approximate field descriptions are listed below. To edit the field descriptions, follow the edit link: this links to another page from which these descriptions are transcluded.

  • general
  • history

Description

edit

This field is for articles which contain general information about mathematics not related to a particular field, including:

structure, methodology, institutions, prizes, and sociology.

Articles which are not field specific because they concern ideas or terminology used throughout mathematics should instead be rated under basics. Most notation is also rated under basics, unless it has a particular cultural significance. Articles assigned to the history field are currently listed together with the general field: for historical articles within other fields, it is preferable to use the historical parameter of the maths rating template.

  • basics

Description

edit

This field is for articles which cover elementary material or terminology used throughout mathematics, including:

elementary arithmetic and recreational mathematics.

Some articles in these areas might instead be rated under general, depending on their content.

  • analysis

Description

edit

This field is for articles which concern mathematical analysis, including:

sequences and series, calculus, measure theory, inequalities, functional analysis and operator theory.

Some articles in these areas (such as measure theory) might instead be rated under probability and statistics, depending on their content.

  • algebra

Description

edit

This field is for articles which concern algebra in its many forms, including:

elementary algebra, linear algebra, abstract algebra and computational algebra.

Some articles in these areas might instead be rated under discrete, number theory, geometry or foundations, depending on their content.

  • geometry

Description

edit

This field is for articles which have primarily geometrical content, including:

elementary geometry, algebraic geometry, convex geometry and differential geometry.

Some articles in these areas might instead be rated under basics, number theory or algebra, depending on their content.

  • applied

Description

edit

This field is for articles which have a traditional focus towards applications, including:

mechanics, optimization, information theory (?) and numerical analysis.

Some articles in these areas might instead be rated under probability and statistics, mathematical physics, or discrete mathematics, depending on their content.

  • probability and statistics
  • probability
  • statistics

Description

edit

This field is for articles which concern the theory and application of probability and statistics, including:

probability, statistics and financial mathematics.

Some articles in these areas might instead be rated under analysis or applied, depending on their content.

  • number theory

Description

edit

This field is for articles on number theory, including:

elementary number theory, algebraic number theory and analytic number theory.

Some articles in these areas might instead be rated under algebra or geometry, depending on their content.

  • discrete

Description

edit

This field is for articles concerning the more combinatorial, computational, finite, or constructive aspects of mathematics, including:

combinatorics, algorithms and theoretical computer science.

Some articles in these areas might instead be rated under algebra or applied, depending on their content.

  • foundations

Description

edit

This field is for articles which on foundational aspects of mathematics, including:

mathematical logic, model theory, set theory, some general topology and category theory.

Some articles in these areas might instead be rated under algebra or topology, depending on their content. This field does not include articles on elementary set theory or arithmetic, which are rated under basics.

  • mathematical physics

Description

edit

This field is for articles at the interface of mathematics and physics, including:

hamiltonian/lagrangian particle and field theory, relativity, quantum mechanics and string theory.

Some articles in these areas might instead be rated under applied, depending on their content.

  • topology

Description

edit

This field is for articles which have primarily topological content, including:

general topology, algebraic topology, homotopy theory, some differerential topology and geometric topology.

Some articles in these areas might instead be rated under basics, foundations, or geometry, depending on their content.

  • mathematician
  • mathematicians

Description

edit

This field is for articles about mathematicians. Additional information about mathematicians, including the fields to which they contributed, should be listed on a /Data subpage of the article talk page.
