Wikipedia:WikiProject Ireland/By-county category navigation
A series of navigation templates has been created to facilitate navigation between categories by county in the Island of Ireland.
Each of them works in the same way: without requiring any parameters, each of them will create a navbox with links to identically-named categories for other counties.
So, on "Category:History of County Foo", they create a set of links "Category:History of County Bar" etc.
Non-existent categories are not linked. Instead, they are greyed out.
Variations edit
Several variations exist, for different purposes.
By far the most commonly-used is Template:AllIrelandByCountyCatNav. This is for category sets which cover the whole Island of Ireland
Some situations require slightly different treatment:
- Republic of Ireland only
- Template:RepublicOfIrelandOnlyByCountyCatNav.
This is for category sets which include only the Republic, e.g. National Monuments by county. It uses the 26 "traditional" counties, plus the new subdivisions of County Dublin.
- Northern Ireland only
- Template:NorthernIrelandOnlyByCountyCatNav.
This is for category sets which include only the 6 "traditional" counties of Northern Ireland, e.g. The Troubles by county
- Pre-partition
- See Template:PrePartitionIrelandByCountyCatNav.
This is for use on category sets which wholly pre-date the partition of Ireland in 1921–22.
It creates a navbox which is:- a single list (i.e. is not divided into Norniron/Republic)
- Uses the old names for two midlands counties: King's County instead of County Offaly, and Queen's County instead of County Laois
- GAA
- See Template:GAAbyCountyCatNav. This is for use on Gaelic Athletic Association category sets. The differences are that
- The word "County" is not used in these categories
- The list is not divided between the Republic/Norniron
- Some overseas counties of the GAA are included
- The GAA uses "Derry" rather than Londonderry
Errors edit
If the template is used on a category whose name does not include a valid county, then an error message is displayed.
Development edit
These template started off as a proposal at WP:WikiProject Ireland/CatNavProposal. The idea was refined through discussion at WT:WikiProject Ireland/CatNavProposal, and deployed in May 2018 after a 15-day trial on 150 pages.
