Signups open for The Core Contest

edit

The Core Contest—Wikipedia's most exciting contest—will take place this year from April 15 to May 31. The goal: to improve vital or other core articles, with a focus on those in the worst state of disrepair. Editing can be done individually, but in the past groups have also successfully competed. There is £300 of prize money divided among editors who provide the "best additive encyclopedic value". Signups are open now. Cheers from the judges, Femke, Casliber, Aza24.

If you wish to start or stop receiving news about The Core Contest, please add or remove yourself from the delivery list.

Possible hoax?

edit

Kalloor appears to be a WP:HOAX. Created August 31, 2005, not subatantially altered since. Only other inbound link is Shri Datta Venkata Sai Temple, itself made in 2009 and turning up no non-Wikipedia mirrors. It's possibly I'm missing something and these were just not translated properly from one of the many languages used in India. However, the lack of... anything on Kalloor, along with spurious claims of the apostle Thomas being killed there -- itself not supported by Thomas the Apostle. While Kalloor does appear to be a given name in India, the claims about the family name's origins are not backed up by any sources. As these also existed at the same time as the spurious claims of the city, it's very likely all of that is hoax too. Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 23:09, 4 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

There's a mention there of "Bishop Yoohanon Chrysostom Kalloor of the Catholic Church, from the Kalloor family in Pathanamthitta" and our Yoohanon Chrysostom is about a bishop whose full name is Yoohanon Chrysostom Kalloor and whose existence is confirmed by the three sources. That might of course be a little nugget lending veracity to inventions about Thomas - I don't know. I notice the long third source about the Pathanamthitta diocese[1] begins by mentioning Thomas founding the Christian community in India without tying that to Pathanamthitta or any mention of his death. (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) has been nominated for discussion at WP:RFD. Do we have an article that covers the usage of this symbol on historical/tourist maps, as a marker of a battlesite?

Not a lot of pages on particular symbols used on maps that I've seen here. There isn't really a standard set of symbols for all maps anyway, so while it might appear on a few here and there, there isn't necessarily going to have literature on it. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 02:43, 22 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Philosophy of geography page needs some attention

edit

The page "Philosophy of geography" is in desperate need of attention. Currently, the page only goes back to the 1930s, and only focuses on the Western tradition, mostly American. Obviously, there is a lot of room to expand. I started a discussion on its talk page, but think that it might get more attention here. If anyone is interested in flushing out some high level geographic theory, that could be a fun project to take on. Anyone with experience writing about critical geography could be particularly useful. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 20:15, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Lists of municipalities

edit

I'd like to let you know that Mattximus and I are working on improving lists of municipalities for provinces in Spain. We aim at getting all of them to featured list status, which has already been achieved for Albacete. Right now, we've got a couple more (Guadalajara and Toledo) as featured list candidates, where they would require suggestions for improvement. Comments are welcome there. I mention it here, should anyone be interested in having a look at them. Kind regards, Alavense (talk) 09:44, 9 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Does WikiProject Geography cover all town and village articles?

edit

I've encountered many articles that fall under the scope of WP:WikiProject Cities (such as town, village, and city articles) that have also been added to WikiProject Geography (see Talk:Ferdows and Talk:Taheriyeh, towns and villages in Iran, and Talk:Lesnoye Ukolovo, a rural locality in Russia). However, the inclusion of these types of articles in WP:Geography is rare, and most town and city articles haven't been added to WP:Geography. My question is: do these articles actually belong at WP:Geography, or do they not? If they do, what criteria should be met for, say, a village article to be included in WP:Geography? And if they don't, then they could be removed from the project. Nythar (💬-🍀) 07:56, 6 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Cities is a subset of human geography. Any article which deals with a populated place should be included in Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities. Any article which deals primarily with the physical geography of a populated place should also be included in Wikipedia:WikiProject Geography. My two bits. That makes sense. I had been wondering why numerous articles were added to both WikiProjects because it didn't make sense to me why we'd include regular WP:Cities articles in WP:Geography; it seemed a bit excessive. Nythar (💬-🍀) 05:59, 8 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Looking for reviews

edit

guys I just added a lot of links to the Geography sidebar, Human geography and Geography topics templates, can some of you check to see if it is appropriate or should I continue adding links. I personally think all branches of geography should have these templates (not the human geography one for those outside it of course) and therefore should add their respective links to the templates Atakes Ris (talk) 12:18, 15 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
