WikiProject Cricket
Welcome to Wikiproject Cricket, a project to increase and expand the cricket-related articles in Wikipedia, the largest encyclopaedia in the world! And we rely on cricket-lovers everywhere to make this the best cricket encyclopaedia on the web. If you're a cricket-lover yourself, maybe you'd like to join us.

What is Wikipedia?

edit

Wikipedia is a user created encyclopaedia run by a non-commercial not-for-profit organisation. Type a subject in the "search box" and see what appears - maybe try "Cricket" and read our article on the sport. See that "edit this page" tab at the top of this page. Please don't experiment here, but that means you can, if you so wish, edit any page in Wikipedia and have your changes appear immediately. You can experiment on Wikipedia:Sandbox. Enter anything you want, and see what appears! Remember no constructive edit is too small!

Wherever you see a word or phrase underlined in blue, that means you can click and read an article. And, of course, if you can spot an improvement, you can just make it there and then. Where a word or phrase is underlined in red, that means that article has not yet been written - and, if you wish, you can click on that word or phrase and create that article.

And we're international. As Wikipedia is web-based, we have contributors the world over - which should be great for developing pages on a world-wide sport such as cricket!

User accounts

edit

Anyone can edit Wikipedia, regardless of whether they have a user account. However, if you find yourself contributing regularly, it's normally a good idea to create a user account. You don't have to use your real name if you don't want to, and it helps if others want to communicate you - maybe to check what source your information comes from, or even (sometimes) to congratulate you on your contributions.

What is WikiProject Cricket?

edit

Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket is a bunch of cricket-loving Wikipedia editors. It allows us to discuss what we're doing, ask for help, and advertise new articles we have written. Any cricket-loving Wikipedian (ie someone with a user account) is free to join. Look at Portal:Cricket to see some of our better articles, and Category:Cricket will allow you to locate every cricket-related article we've got. As you'll see, there are quite a lot of them, but there's a long way to go. Add the project to your watchlist for the latest on what's happening around the project.

Things that need doing

edit

We're always on the look-out for new images and photographs. We must respect copyright, which doesn't help but is the way of the world, but pictures you've taken or that are out of copyright are more than welcome.

We have many leading players still to write about or expand; and many teams, grounds, umpires and histories. Pick one or more and get contributing! Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Updating our match articles

edit

Starting with the 2005 English cricket season, we are writing summaries of every major international season and international tours. We already have Pakistanis in West Indies in 2005 and have started 2005 and 2005-06 Sri Lankan cricket seasons. Please feel free to help (but remember, this is an encyclopaedia, not a write-up of personal accounts of games).

Updating cricket articles

edit

Our ultimate goal is to get articles to Featured status, ie the best on Wikipedia.

  • Add and expand information on cricketers
  • Add and expand information on umpires
  • Add and expand cricket grounds
  • Add and expand cricket events
  • Add births and deaths to the respective date list
  • See the "todo" list on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cricket
  • Cricket News
