Please invite these and any other similar groups to join the discussion about this proposal. See Wikipedia:WikiProject_Council/Directory to find similar WikiProjects.
Why do you want to start a new group, instead of joining one of these existing groups?
  • Work on piyyut, although interdisciplinary, is very specific; and the scholars that are currently working on piyyut, who would be necessary for this project, are not necessarily the same kind of people that would be interested in the more general WikiProjects on Judaism or Poetry. They might agree to spend their time on Wikipedia only when they see that it's a project that only they, specifically, are capable of doing.

Support edit

Also, specify whether or not you would join the project.

Yes, I would definitely want to join the project, and am qualified.

Discussion edit

What we need is articles on the following topics:

  • Genres of piyyut (I count about 35, and have created the page "genres of piyyut", and started creating pages for a few of them).
  • Authors of piyyut (Probably at least 100.)
  • "Schools" of piyyut (in the sense of a school of fish, not in the sense of an institution where classes are taught), divided by geographical region and period.
  • Modern scholars of piyyut (at least 20 notable ones)
  • Occasions/venues for which piyyutim were composed, and features of the piyyutim for said occasions. The pages would be: "Piyyutim for Weekdays", "Piyyutim for Rosh Hashana", "Piyyutim for Hanukkah", "Piyyutim for Passover", "Piyyutim for Purim", "Piyyutim for Circumcision Feasts", "Piyyutim for Weddings", etc. (About 25.)
  • Literary devices used by authors of piyyut. Many of these devices are also used by authors of medieval secular Hebrew poetry, but there is very little on Wikipedia about them, either, so this could belong in WikiProject Piyyut.
