1969 is too far back - off the top of my head I can think of Whitten at Footscray up to 1970 and then Big Nick at Carlton in 1972 - there must be at least one more that managed it for the rest of the 70s (but no more come immediately to mind - hang on, I'm sure there is an Essendon one around early to mid 70s) - good idea to wait the 24 hours though, because I don't know for sure. It is possible that Bluey Hampshire may have temporarily been Captain-Coach during the Footscray's pre-season of 1983, but in the end elected not to play and definitely only coached the actual season. I have a reasonable recollection that in the very late 70s or early 80s, a particular VFL team actually clocked up more than 40 behinds. What was the team and the actual score? They are the only bits I remember, I'm not sure who it was against and the year - but bonus points for whoever can guess that. The actual scoreline was bizarre back than, and continues to strike one as absolutely bizarre to this day (I'm confident no one has ever kicked more behinds since). There was a famous incident in an Essendon v Footscray game at the Western Oval in 1973 when Don McKenzie kicked Footscray's 2nd ruckman, breaking his leg. Men were men in those days, and the big man took his free kick from about 10 metres out, and dobbed it with a broken leg. C'mon guys and gals - it's not that bad! When I say he was big, I mean he could stand next to Big Nick and not feel intimidated. He went on to become a great ruckman at another club, perhaps is best remembered for playing with that club (which experienced turmoil at the end of the 1981 season). Firstly, I hope people aren't pulling out? In 1973, as a 16 year old kid I kicked 104 goals from full forward for Traralgon in my first full year of senior football. Needless to say I was picked up by a VFL club the following year (at a time when zoning applied). I spent the first two weeks in the reserves where I kicked a total of 15 goals, a sum that was to lead the reserves goalkicking until about round 16. I debuted in round 3 against Collingwood and kicked 6 goals. Some years down the track I would win the league goalkicking in two consecutive years, and then immediately snaffle a Brownlow after being shifted to centre half forward. Injury cut my career short. I am thinking of a player who topped his club's goal kicking for 12 years in a row, all but one of the seasons he was at the club. However, he was the league's top goal kicker on only one occaision. From memory, 1990 was the first year of the renamed AFL. I would like to try a double barelled question in relation to the opening round of that season. My mates and I had chartered a six-seater from Canberra to Melbourne to witness something special (nothing to do with the new name of the league, or at least not directly). We went from Essendon Airport to the Western Oval, only to see Footscray go down to St Kilda. Footscray's appearance on the ground to start the game was met with an unusually eerie silence.

  1. What was so special about Footscray's opening game in 1990, that was the cause for the unusual crowd behaviour and the main reason why I did my dough on a chartered flight?
  2. The only good news for Footscray that day is that a skinny 17 year old debuted for them at full forward, kicking 2 or 3 goals, and showing a bit. That season he became the youngest player to ever reach the 50 goal mark, and he would go on to become a champion key position player for the Bulldogs. Who is he?

Well I only know Port Adelaide so I will have to ask a Port related question but this should be easy:

Who am I? I am a left-footed rover who made my VFL debut in 1982 before getting the Lemonade and Sars in 1985 and moving to Port Adelaide. I was a useful contributor without being brilliant at Port, so it surprised many when another VFL club recruited me in 1986. I spent 5 seasons at this club before retirement. Brad Gotch is right. Debuted for Fitzroy in 1982 before being cut and recruited to Port. I remember seeing him play for Port in 1985 and thinking that he wasn't anything special. So, many at Port were surprised when St Kilda recruited him and he spent five seasons with the Saints. He then won a VFL flag as a coach and now is an assistant coach at Colingwood.
