What is a Wikipedia Editathon?
It's an informal gathering to work on editing Wikipedia articles.
We would like to encourage Wikipedians, and people interested in learning how Wikipedia works, to attend the day. We will collaboratively start and improve articles. There's no set agenda, and you are welcome to recommend articles for others to edit, or to edit on your own.
You don't have to be an expert. Complete beginners are very welcome! We're happy to provide suggestions and help as needed.
We provide the space, the wifi, and the hot drinks; you provide the ideas and the enthusiasm. Feel free to propose a topic for discussion... Ask for feedback... Get together to work on shared ideas... Or curl up in a corner and relax… everyone is welcome.

Where is it?
Newington Green Unitarian Church is located at 39A Newington Green, London N16 9PR. It is a ten-minute walk from Canonbury Overground station, and on frequent bus routes 21, 73, 141, 236, 341, 476. Get off at the bus stop named as Newington Green. Kings Cross station then the 476 or 73 bus (about 20 minutes) is the easiest route for people from out of London. Bicycle parking is available at the venue. Further transport information can be found here.
The chapel is a distinctive building at the head (the north end) of the green, with a banner to Mary Wollstonecraft on its railings. The front doors will probably be locked; please come to the door on the side, past the wall art of Wollstonecraft. The editathon will take place upstairs in the Mary Wollstonecraft Room.
When is it?
Feel free to drop in between 10am and 6pm. We'll run introductory sessions starting at 10:30 and 2:30.
Is food served?
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. Wikimedia UK will provide sandwiches or similar at lunchtime.
And in the evening?
At 6pm we will head over to the Dissenting Academy - the only pub we know of that's named after an educational establishment - to have a drink under their huge portrait of Mary Wollstonecraft. The pub is on the south-east corner of Newington Green, 150m from the daytime venue. If you can't make it during the day, we'd still love to see you in the evening.
 
Dr. Adrianne Wadewitz
What's with the Wadewitz-Wollstonecraft link?
Dr. Adrianne Wadewitz was a prolific and generous contributor to Wikipedia, originally as User:Awadewit and later as Wadewitz, working particularly to combat systemic bias and the gender gap. She was a member of the board of the Wiki Education Foundation, and led initiatives to bring Wikipedia within the higher education fold. Her sudden death last month has led to many tribute events and editathons around the world. Her PhD was in 18th century British literature, and she brought many related articles to Featured level, including that on Mary Wollstonecraft, the author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman.
In fact, all of Wollstonecraft's books, and all of the most historically significant people in her life, have Featured Articles: an immense resource, largely due to Wadewitz. Wollstonecraft lived in Newington Green in the 1780s, and knew the church, which now has her image as street art spraypainted on an outer wall, and a function room named after her. What better memorial to Wadewitz could there be than an editathon in the Mary Wollstonecraft Room? One possible area to edit is articles related to these Featured ones, that are not yet at that level.
Having said that, the day is open - work on whatever you wish.

Things to edit

  • articles that link to w:Mary Wollstonecraft, especially those touching on educational or feminist ideas
  • Female writers of her time, such as w:Anna Laetitia Barbauld
  • People associated with the church (about 20 have entries in the "Oxford Dictionary of National Biography")
  • w:Newington Green and the neighbouring villages that were incorporated into London (w:Stoke Newington, w:Dalston, w:Hackney, etc.)
  • 18th century British children's literature, in honour of Dr Wadewitz (or children's literature of any period and place)
  • w:Dissenting academies, of which there are many specific ones
  • Dissenting chapels in general, and Unitarian ones in particular

Anything else is totally fine too. Blue amber from the Dominican Republic, the jibaro music of Puerto Rico, the poetry of Maya Angelou, epigenetics, economic botany (the foundation of Kew Gardens), Morris dancing, the Millennium Bridge or the Millennium Falcon - whatever you're interested in, this is the time to dive in.
