Spermatocyte Stub

This article is also in the stub category. It has a definition of what a spermatocyte is, two pictures and a table summary of what makes up the male reproductive system, but no sources whatsoever. On the talk page there is lack of a discussion by Wikipedia editors. There is one post on the talk page about ploidy and asking Wikipedia editors to address this in article. The person was kind enough to list the sources for his reasoning. To make this article into a class B or GA category more information will be needed and of course with the proper relevant sources on the topic. Some more examples and diagrams would be nice to have.

This article is classified as being larger than a stub. It has two paragraphs of information, with two diagrams as well. There are two sources referenced; there has been some discussion of improvement on the talk page, however it seems as though the last post was from 2009. This article will need to be expanded considerably, as well as the addition of many more references. I think that it is off to a good start, though.

Article selection rationale

Spermatocyte

For our first Wikipedia article, we chose the topic spermatocyte. Although, my partner and I are not experts on the subject we hope to learn more about it while completing research to write our article. We wanted to choose a topic that is straightforward and that once completed would be useful to the scientific community. This article was rated of high importance by the molecular and cellular biology Wikiproject. The directory of Male Reproductive System articles at the bottom of the spermatocyte page reveals that many areas in the general topic are well documented; however, some of the articles in spermatogenesis subtopic, of which the spermatocyte article is included, seem to lack thorough, referenced information. Perhaps the completion of this project will contribute to a better understanding of the overall subject area of spermatogenesis and lead to improvement of some of the other articles in this subtopic as well. At the moment, the spermatocyte stub is fairly basic listing the definition of what a spermatocyte is and including two pictures one of the development and the other a histological section of boar testis. There is a lack of description of the images shown. We hope to include more relevant information on the subject matter and elaborate on the images provided and provide even more images. There has been a lack of discussion on the talk page of this article. There is one post asking Wikipedian’s to elaborate on the ploidy of the spermatocyte, because they believe what is listed in the definition is incorrect. We will definitely address changes to the stub information if it is indeed incorrect. I have listed the ideas I have for subsections within the article below.

Overall Improvements to Article

Over the course of the semester, we feel we were greatly able to improve the quality of the Spermatocyte article. When we chose the article, it was of stub classification, with only a few brief sentences and one image. We have removed the content that was originally there, as we found it to be plagiarized. We researched and provided information in sections of Formation, Endocrine initiation, Cell type, History, Damage, repair, and failure, Specific mutations, and Unique properties in different species. We have added seven relevant images to the article, which we believe help to understand the sections discussed. While the article previously had little to no credible references, we have now added 17 that we found to be credible and relevant. We incorporated a table into the Cell type summary section, which we feel will help to clear up any confusion about the different stages of cell type in spermatogenesis. The peer reviewers of our article, including the OAs, were helpful in suggesting images we could incorporate, as well as topics they thought would add to the quality of the article, e.g. History.
