Madonna in the Church is a small oil panel painting by the Early Netherlandish artist Jan van Eyck. Probably executed c. 1438–40, it shows the Virgin Mary in a Gothic cathedral holding the Child Jesus. She is presented as Queen of Heaven, wearing a jewel-studded crown and cradling the playful child who grips the hem of her dress. Tracery in the arch at the rear of the nave contains wooden carvings depicting episodes from her life. The work evidences the new approach and techniques applied to oil painting but is still influenced by medieval, monumental Byzantine depictions of the Madonna; she is unrealistically large compared to her surroundings. Highly detailed and lineated beams of light flood through the cathedral's windows, illuminating the interior and culminating in two pools near her feet. Most art historians believe the panel began as the left wing of a since dismantled diptych; its opposite wing was most likely a votive portrait. (Full article...)

- Reasons for nomination: A haunting painting and window into the transition between the medieval and early modern eras. Ceoil (talk) 00:57, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
- Support always good to decorate the mainpage with a painting. Cas Liber (talk ·contribs) 01:56, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
- Support as 3rd henchman. Slightly tempted, after consulting Marian feast days, to pitch it for her birthday on September 8th (as all denominations who take a view agree). Johnbod (talk) 01:59, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
- Comment As of right now, specific date nominations are only open up to August 12th — Chris Woodrich (talk) 14:10, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Chris. As per Johnbod above, I'm inclinded to close this and wait until September. I'll let it stand for a few hours for the other co-noms to voice. Ceoil (talk) 15:18, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
- Support. Although this and Fancy Dress Ball are both paintings, they have very little in common and would be more than a month apart, so I don't see any particular diversity issue. – iridescent 23:05, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

- Support I got lost in the "which day" thread, but I don't care which day it is put out anyway. The image pokes out of the bottom of box on my screen; is that just my monitor being quirky and endearing? Belle (talk) 09:57, 17 July 2015 (UTC)

Coordinator's comment: I shall be scheduling this, but with a word of caution. The "Art and Archirecture" category of available articles for TFA accounts for about 2.2 per cent of the total, which suggests that, on a proportionate basis, we should schedule about 8 a year. We've already reached that total for 2015 – this will be the ninth, and I gather from Victoria's comment that she has another in mind for October 5th... Like nearly everyone else, I enjoy seeing art on the front page, but we shouldn't be using this limited resource up too quickly, so I suggest that after October 5 you hold back on TFA noms from this category for a bit.
