This template is used in a total of 3 articles that can be easily be fixed by substitution. While reference templates can be useful, AFAIK, they are usually reserved for references that are used in hundreds or thousands of articles. There is a very low likelihood that will happen in this case. I think it is wishful thinking for this book. Having the reference is the article proper is beneficial to allow regular maintenance and ease of editing.
