Fall 2012 Organic Honors Project (see also Wikipedia:School and university projects/reactorgo/projects)

Objective edit

To increase accessibility of chemical information to the general public.

Project guidelines edit

Accounts edit

Each student will be required to create his or her own Wikipedia account. Students will then be assigned to a group. The sandbox feature, accessible from the top right of the page once you have logged into your account, is a space that you can create your article in stages. Your fellow group members are also able to edit the page. It will be the way we measure group progress before final submission. Each group will elect a leader whose account sandbox will be used to prepare the article before submission. Once the leader is chosen, they will add a link to their sandbox to the group project page. Instructions for creating links can be found here Help:Link. Each group will then choose a relevant chemical lacking a Wikipedia article and update the project page to reflect this.

Article Requirements edit

Each group will be required to obtain no less than 50 points in order to qualify for James Scholar credit. In addition, all articles must conform to Wikipedia's standards on notability and must follow the manual of style for chemical articles. Each completed article is worth a maximum of 25 points with point breakdown below.

Five points will also be given if the article can be successfully submitted to Wikipedia without getting taken down by a bot or moderator.

Each article must contain a minimum of 15 points to qualify for submission.

Chembox edit

Each item of information, including images, in the chembox yields .25 pts. Max 12 pts.

Sections edit

1-4 points per section based on quality and completeness. Max 10 pts Possible topics for sections include but are not limited to:

  • Properties
  • Occurrences
  • History
  • Production
  • Reactions
  • etc.

References edit

At least four references are required for each article.

  • 4 references 1 pt
  • 6+ references 3 pts

Resources edit

For any Wikipedia questions, Help:contents has all of the answers.

A list of potentially useful resources and software exists here. In addition, the University of Illinois Chemistry library has a number of useful resources, most importantly, SciFinder. SciFinder is an extensive database of scholarly chemistry articles.

ChemDraw is another useful program for drawing chemical structures. It can be found for free here:

The CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics has an extensive list of chemicals with their properties. It's available in the library and here:

Feel free to use the "Talk" page (tab at the top of the page) to ask questions, leave comments or suggestions, etc. Instructions for talk page use are here. You can also email us. Be sure to use the following format for the subject line, "Group #-Chemical." We would like to avoid your emails getting lost or ignored.

Deadlines edit

  • September 21st- Create a wikipedia account and email REACT the name of the account and its user.
  • October 5th- Submit the chemicals for which you will create a page for approval. Do this as early as possible because duplicate chemicals between groups are not allowed.
  • October 19th- Midway checkpoint- Submit your pages for initial critiques to get them ready for peer review
  • November 2nd- Peer reviews are due
  • November 16th- All projects should be submitted for final grading and uploaded to wikipedia.
